Barbara Walters: I had affair with U.S. senator (additional barf bags required)

NEW YORK (AP) -- After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters is disclosing a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."

Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.

A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

From Barbara Walters Wikipedia page:

On March 3, 1999, she interviewed Monica Lewinsky in front of a record 74 million viewers, the highest ratings of any journalist interview. Walters asked Lewinsky, "What will you tell your children about this matter?" and Lewinsky replied, "'I guess Mommy made some mistakes,'" at which point Walters brought the program to a dramatic conclusion, turning to the viewers and saying, "And that is the understatement of the century".

Who knew that she was Monica before Monica was?

O Jeez. I come out and finally publically admit that I had sex with a Senator, and Barbara’s gotta one-up me.

Hey, Laz. Baseball players don't count.

Good find — Barbara Walters, the Monica Lewinsky of the ‘70s....

I don’t know why anyone but a pop star or Hollywood slut would imagine that the public should know about their sex life or especially about their adultery, but we live in an era in which the herd of bleating narcissists stampeding over all of us simply cannot wait to “tell all” about themselves.

It used to be that the only “tell all” was about other people. :^)

I think Jane Curtin’s character was modeled on Shana Alexander of “Point Counterpoint.” Now who was the guy Dan Aykroyd was doing? I think it was James Kilpatrick, but I dont recall for sure.

The late, lamented Gilda Radner, of course, immortalized “Baba Wawa.”

I recall an interview long ago with Senator Brooke by Lovell Dyett on WBZ. After the Senator left, they were still taking calls and, lo and behold, his DAUGHTER called up. And was she steamed! She practically melted down on the air, it was one of the most bizarre things I ever heard. Her anger was directed at her father for whatever he did to her mother. Looks like we’re finding out what it was. (I think the wife was suffering from some illness or disability)

But as others have said, what in the world is the point in bringing this out now? How many people will be hurt who didn’t have to be?

After showing disdain for her cretin politician’s family, why does she feel compelled to reveal this to the world?

You are correct on that, it was based on the 60 Minutes point/counterpoint. Not Baba Wawa.

“his DAUGHTER called up. And was she steamed!”

That would have been Remi Brooke. She and sister Edwina went to the same school I did in the early ‘60s. Remi was quite the drama queen even then. Edwina preferred to be transported in the (then Mass. Attorney General’s) car by the Missus or Dad, while Remi preferred to take the school bus back to Boston. She’d stand in the front of the bus, with a transistor radio glued to one ear, while flirting with the cute, college-age bus driver.

She dished the dirt about her Dad to the media at least as far back as 1978:

A reporter asks Brooke if someone has “an axe to grind” about the settlement. Brooke says that someone peddled this story to the news media all over the state of Massachusetts and in Washington D.C.; that the release of the story coincides with his bid for reelection to the US Senate; that he feels like he is being “blackmailed.” Brooke says that he thinks the story is being used in an attempt to force him to give up more to his wife in the divorce settlement. Brooke admits that his daughter, Remi, is responsible for leaking the story to the media.
