The ILWU: Back to its Marxist Roots
March 12, 2008
At a time when even Russia and China are rejecting their Marxist past, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union still plans on celebrating the birth of communism by taking May Day off.
These are people, by the way, who earn six-figure incomes, generous benefits, and pensions for putting in fewer hours on the job than their dock-working comrades anywhere in the world.
That measure of failed solidarity notwithstanding, the ILWU is also asking the AFL-CIO to join them in the work stoppage.
Is it any wonder why many shippers are now choosing to bypass the West Coast altogether now? And with upcoming labor negotiations pending with the Pacific Maritime Association this spring, one might expect even more symbolic disruptions.
Helps explain why Hampton/Newport news has become the # 3 port for bulk cargoes in the US.
Check out the comments section.
One comment said that the Longshoremen are entitled to 8 hours, 8 HOURS, of work stoppage each month to hold their union meeting.
Imagine trying that at your work?
The ILWU contract in due to expire on June 30, 2008.
In 2002 contract negotiations, the ILWU engaged in a work slowdown, which resulted in the economic loss of $1 billion.
President Bush had to enact Taft-Hartley to get them back to work.
The Seattle Times did an article on the dockworkers who unload the container cargo and put it on railroad cars or trucks. They interviewed one guy who sat in one of the cranes. They would not show his face which seemed odd but they did have a picture of his smile. He had a solid gold star implanted in one of his front teeth. He was making well over $100,000 a year and had all the overtime he wanted....It must be nice.
Read the tag line. It is why unions support the Dems.
They are not Communists! They ARE Mafia!
They ARE communists.
When they lose their jobs to the Mexicans in Lazaro Cardenas, those guys will wrap themselves in the American flag so fast it’ll make your head spin.
Yep they are Commie.
The ILWU was once expelled from the CIO for it’s Commie leadership, Harry Bridges.
FYI,
The east and gulf coast longshormen’s union is the ILA, International Longshoremen’s Association is a different union with different leadership than the ILWU.
I believe the ILA actually suported Nixon over McGovern in 1972. The ILA has a strong anti-communist history
The support amnesty.
“In 2002 contract negotiations, the ILWU engaged in a work slowdown, which resulted in the economic loss of $1 billion.”
They didn’t engage in a slow down, they were locked out by management (PMA) for 10 days, and rightfully so.
I agree.
The ILA expelled the ILWU because of it’s communist ties.
The ILA historically been anti-communist because of the large portion of membership who’s families have experienced the “joys” of Communism.
ILWU strikes against Apartheid, Contra-War, War on Terror.
ILA strikes against Soviet Union invasion of Afghanistan.
They supported Reagan as well....the I.L.A. President at the time was Teddy Gleason....a good Irishman who liked R.R.
Wrong.
The ILWU was engaged in a slow down as a negotiation tool.
This causes havoc at the ports and in the US economy.
The ILWU misplaced or mislabeled containers, refused to send people from the “Halls”, failed to followed work assignments and work orders, members left for breaks and never came back.
This resulted in a 60% decrease of activity in the ports.
But the ILWU’s President said that they can use any tactic it wants during the negotiations.
Wait until June 30, they are going to use the same tactics again and ruin the economy.
Shippers are already preparing for the “Slow Down” by shifting to ports in Mexico and the Gulf Coast.
Why are their sites all down??
who’s sites?
International Longshoremen's Association (boards)
ILA Atlantic Coast District...
They're all like that.
