Miley Cyrus is Not Your Kids’ Role Model
North Star Writers Group ^ | April 30, 2008 | Dan Calabrese

Posted on 04/30/2008 4:41:22 AM PDT by Invisigoth

Hannah Montana is on in our house more than I care to acknowledge, but such is life when your wife, er, I mean, your seven-year-old is a manic Disney Channel fan. It’s actually a pretty funny show, although it doesn’t hold a candle to Cory in the House. (You just can’t beat White House chase scenes with Benny Hill-style music.)

But this show could not have turned the now-besieged Miley Cyrus into a teen-pop phenomenon, and thus a “role model” if viewers of the show – and I mainly mean parents – could keep the whole thing in perspective.

Fifteen-year-old Miley is catching heat for posing in some rather suggestive photos by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, including one in which she is topless but covering herself with a sheet.

Yeah, I said she’s 15. What do you think will happen when her father, erstwhile mullet legend Billy Ray Cyrus, finds out? Oh yeah, that’s right. He was there for the photo shoot. He was even in a couple of the photos. That’s one American parent who’s not beside himself over it. Unfortunately, he might be the only one.

“It’s been thirty years since we had the same arguments about Brooke Shields. I’m not a big fan, but she turned out all right.”

Took the words right out...er, right off my typing fingers.

YUCK! Is she supposed to look as if she’s just been raped?

Yeah. Pretty much, when you think about it...

That was no help. Still don’t know who she is. The photo from post 4 didn’t help either, but if that’s her she’s not very pretty.

Outspoken lesbian women using 15 yr olds in sexual poses is considered “art” of an “edgy” character. It’s not the first time MSSSS Liebovitz has used her art to focus in on female sexuality.

If Annie (or anyone else) took these photos to a private lab to be developed she’d be busted for pedophilia.

No parent in their right mind should be taking their underage daughters to a photo shoot dominated (yes dominated) by someone like Annie Liebovitz. Who has now apologized for urging this pose. Kinda.

"No, honey, when I said 'doggy style' I had something completely different in mind."

Off topic comment? too racy? Well, aside from its adult humor, it's on point, actually. What is acceptable for adults is not necessarily good for our impressionable youth. It's the sexualization of our children that has so many people up in arms. Yes, Leibovitz is an 'artist' and the female form is beautiful* and the subject of countless classical art pieces. But the issue is whether a pop icon should partake in adult-themed activities, sending a subtle "it's ok to do this" message to her young, impressionable fan base. The answer is a resounding "no." Looks like father and daughter got caught up in the celebrity of it all and lost focus.

*With certain notable exceptions - please do not note them!

She’s a manufactured tv pop star like the Monkees were...on the Disney Channel.

Hannah Montana is one of the few on Disney we don’t allow our children to watch.

Miley sounds like a dog’s name.

My daughter says Miley's real name is Destiny Hope.

It’s been thirty years since we had the same arguments about Brooke Shields. I’m not a big fan, but she turned out all right.

But it's not really about Brooke Shields or Miley Cyrus. It's about a culture of little kids all across the country who say "I'm 15 years old -- how can I look sexy?" It's not what they should really be focusing on. But they are.

And let's be clear -- Miley is 15, but her fans are younger. So what you really have is 11-year-olds saying "I want to boost my sex appeal and drive guys wild. What would be a good way to do that?"

It's just not healthy for millions of kids.

Liebovitz also got a pass on the supposedly “racist” April 2008 Vogue cover of Gisele Bündchen and LeBron.

All that being said she does great work.

I think her show is relatively good entertainment for pre-teens. My daughter is a big fan. I hope my daughter never sees the photo posted above. I have been disapointed in some of the outfits Mylee wears. At the Country music video awards she wore some very revealing tops and it looked like she was having trouble keeping them together. Also she butchered the duet with her father. Her part of the song sounded like two tomcats fighting in the back alley.

If someone successfully walks blindfolded through a minefield, we are to accept that as a good practice to follow? Maybe a few young ladies who tried to emulate Brooke Sheilds' adolescent sexuality made some things difficult for themselves.

Every teenage girl wants to be sexy, especially girls that are not beautiful nor particularly cute like Miley Cyrus.

I think that's why she posed for a picture like this.

I adopted an 11 year old girl from Ukraine last year. We often sit and watch Hannah Montana on the tube. I’ve not had much problem with it because the show is squeeky clean and harmless. My daughter loves it.

I’ve seen some of Miley’s music videos out lately. I would not want my daughter to be as flirtatious as she comes across. I’ve started pondering just how long it will take to Lindsey Lohanize Miley, and supposed it would take about 5 more years. Sadly I appear to be mistaken.

As far as Vanity Fair is concerned, the only time I look at the magazine is when I’m in the dentist’s waiting room. The rag proves the point: if you take trash and put a very expensive veneer over it, you end up with very expensive, pretentious trash.

I think Annie the Man Liebowitz is a huge lesbian and enticed these poses.

You know any parent that lets their child get involved in show business at that sort of level, let alone helps and encourages them isn’t right in the head to begin with. Why is it shocking that he sad by and watched his daughter have inappropriate photos taken of her?
