It came to me while I was having dinner with Doris Day. No, not that Doris Day. The Doris Day who is married to Col. Bud Day, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, fighter pilot, Vietnam POW and roommate of John McCain at the Hanoi Hilton.
As we ate near the Days' home in Florida recently, I heard things about Sen. McCain that were deeply moving and politically troubling. Moving because they told me things about him the American people need to know. And troubling because it is clear that Mr. McCain is one of the most private individuals to run for president in history.
When it comes to choosing a president, the American people want to know more about a candidate than policy positions. They want to know about character, the values ingrained in his heart. For Mr. McCain, that means they will want to know more about him personally than he has been willing to reveal.
Mr. Day relayed to me one of the stories Americans should hear. It involves what happened to him after escaping from a North Vietnamese prison during the war. When he was recaptured, a Vietnamese captor broke his arm and said, "I told you I would make you a cripple."

Very moving..Thank you.
Impressed. Thanks
That’s good to hear.
If we have Bud Day out there telling his stories and the Democrats have Reverend Wright out there telling his stories, we could be in for a fun autumn. Not because McCain is all that great, but because DUer’s are fun to watch when they are losing.
“Getting to Know John McCain”
Just read up on Benedict Arnold. Same dude, different time.
Damn...just damn.
I guess I am a minority on Free Republic. I voted for McCain in 2000 and I still wish he had won.
There are few people on Earth who can testify, based upon their experience, to the level of integrity and discipline it would take to stay with one's buddies and endure unspeakable crippling treatment rather than return to a comfortable life at home.
I just can not imagine what that would take.
It is also very telling that he's never told these stories publicly or probably even privately before. While we could not describe McCain as “humble”, the contrast between his public handling and communication of his war experience with Kerry, and now even Hillary, is downright shocking.
Remarkable. Thanks for the read.
What complete and utter treacherous hogwash.
Benedict Arnold betrayed America.
John McCain served his country with honor, valor and grit.
Then, by all means, vote for Obama.
our family studied Benedict Arnold extensively last year... i don't see the similarities... and no, i am not a fan of John McCain...
By that I mean, either McCain has been biding his time for several decades in order to be president and has strategically placed himself as the only logical candidate compared to the other democrat nimrods. Taking over the mantle of a conservative champion..........Or he's changed since then and allowed the power and ego to corrupt him in order to be a f'ing RINO and screw us.
The only saving grace about McCain is that he's got two sons that are going to be or have been in harms way.
Of that there is no doubt. So he's got a vested interest in not screwing around with foreign policy.
However due to the military background I feel he's not averse to centralized control...... even when it comes to free markets, medical care, our borders, and tax policy.
So there we have it. All three of the current candidates thinks that all the greatness that is America comes from the government down to the people and not that the government is there only to insure rule of law and several well delineated rights including the right to bear arms and not the right to stick a metal tube inside a baby's head and suck out it's brains cause of an inconvenience.
Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.......
Thanks in advance for cramming that in whatever orifice your species traditionally crams things.
While I don’t agree with his Center/Center position I will vote for him. I think he can handle a tough decision. He has never forgot being held by his captors in Nam and understands the world in Americas eyes better than the left ever will.
Your cynical attitude towards members of our military is disappointing and belies the general ignorance of someone who failed to serve.
