Getting to Know John McCain [MUST READ!]
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 30, 2008 | Karl Rove

Posted on 04/29/2008 10:07:11 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It came to me while I was having dinner with Doris Day. No, not that Doris Day. The Doris Day who is married to Col. Bud Day, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, fighter pilot, Vietnam POW and roommate of John McCain at the Hanoi Hilton.

As we ate near the Days' home in Florida recently, I heard things about Sen. McCain that were deeply moving and politically troubling. Moving because they told me things about him the American people need to know. And troubling because it is clear that Mr. McCain is one of the most private individuals to run for president in history.

When it comes to choosing a president, the American people want to know more about a candidate than policy positions. They want to know about character, the values ingrained in his heart. For Mr. McCain, that means they will want to know more about him personally than he has been willing to reveal.

Mr. Day relayed to me one of the stories Americans should hear. It involves what happened to him after escaping from a North Vietnamese prison during the war. When he was recaptured, a Vietnamese captor broke his arm and said, "I told you I would make you a cripple."

But those are isolated examples that we wave around like we have big influence in DC. (Miers, Dubai Ports, Amnesty)

But what happened to the budget? What happened to the tax code? What happened to the size of government?

Conservatives have been getting pushed around and ignored since 1988- with a very brief victory in 94.

This is FR, not DU.

Yeah... Where we like Conservatives.

DU is where they like liberals like McCain. Or maybe with your fellow WAnkers. They are getting all hot and bothered for McCain...

Conservatives are discovering their influence and power.

There's no question that we are going to get some things that we don't like. The Democrats are going to get a whole lot that they don't like. McCain is a budget hawk, straight line. He voted against the Farm Bill, the Highway Bill and the Prescription Plan. McCain got the line item veto (with Dan Coats) in '96 (I believe).

Following your lead and electing Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton is stupidity gone amok.
It is absolutely reprehensible that you would come on to a thread about John McCain’s heroism as a POW to attack the man.

You are not pitiful.
You are contemptible.

A hero is a hero as long as he remains true. If he does not, he is the worst sort of traitor. He betrayed his first wife while she was in a hospital bed. He betrayed his oath of office to protect the Constitution, and He betrayed Conservatism. A betrayer betrays.

So McCain is a “traitor” for not holding identical politicial views to you?
You are a completely derranged individual.

"Articles like that are like the spoonful of sugar I need to make the medicine of voting for McCain go down." Yep...sadly.

Try to remember this article when the Dems put out some really nasty stuff about their buddy McCain. I think he's going to be shocked at what they accuse (rightly or wrongly) him of.

The boy's got some real dirty (no worse that the two commies trying to run against him) baggage that will astound the less informed.

Bad moon rising!

Uggh! I think I parenthesized myself onto incomprehensible.

That isn't what I said.

You are a completely deranged individual.

Me deranged? You are on a conservative forum pumping up a Soros funded candidate who partners with the likes of Kennedy, Clinton, Feingold, and Kerry, and you are calling me deranged.

It seems to me the board is in your own eye.

I do not agree with McCain on a lot of political issues but no doubt he deserves respect for his service.

At least McCain opposes and requests no pork. Hillary has requested several billion$ worth of earmark spending.
