Obama: I Am ‘Outraged’ and ‘Angered’ By Wright’s Comments
Fox News ^ | April 29, 2008 | staff

Barack Obama, declaring “that’s enough,” denounced Tuesday as “appalling” and “ridiculous” comments made in the last few days by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.

In a press conference in North Carolina, the Illinois senator used his strongest language to date to condemn Wright’s controversial sermons, which have remained a burden on his campaign since they became national news more than a month ago. Wright spoke Monday at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

“I am outraged by the comments that were made, and saddened over the spectacle that we saw yesterday,” Obama said.

“The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe they ended up giving comfort to those who prey on hate,” he said.

Wright capped off a weekend-long set of public appearances at the Press Club, returning to the spotlight and casting an unwanted shadow over Obama’s campaign. Wright used his appearance to taunt reporters, criticize his country’s foreign policy and suggest that Obama only distanced himself from Wright out of political posturing.

Obama said he was particularly “angered” by that suggestion.

“If Reverend Wright thinks that that’s political posturing, as he put it, then he doesn’t know me very well — based on his remarks yesterday I may not know him as well as I thought either,” Obama said.

Shortly after the Wright controversy broke, Obama condemned his pastor’s sermons but still kept him at an arm’s length, saying Wright was “like family” and he could no more “disown” him than his own grandmother.

Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

FrontPageMagazine.com | 4/29/2008

As Barack Obama's candidacy comes under increasing scrutiny, his account of his religious upbringing deserves careful attention for what it tells us about the candidate's integrity.

Obama asserted in December, "I've always been a Christian," and he has adamantly denied ever having been a Muslim. "The only connection I've had to Islam is that my grandfather on my father's side came from that country [Kenya]. But I've never practiced Islam." In February, he claimed: "I have never been a Muslim. … other than my name and the fact that I lived in a populous Muslim country for 4 years when I was a child [Indonesia, 1967-71] I have very little connection to the Islamic religion."

"Always" and "never" leave little room for equivocation. But many biographical facts, culled mainly from the American press, suggest that, when growing up, the Democratic candidate for president both saw himself and was seen as a Muslim.

Obama's Kenyan birth father: In Islam, religion passes from the father to the child. Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. (1936–1982) was a Muslim who named his boy Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. Only Muslim children are named "Hussein".

Obama's Indonesian family: His stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, was also a Muslim. In fact, as Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng explained to Jodi Kantor of the New York Times: "My whole family was Muslim, and most of the people I knew were Muslim." An Indonesian publication, the Banjarmasin Post reports a former classmate, Rony Amir, recalling that "All the relatives of Barry's father were very devout Muslims."

Barack Obama's Catholic school in Jakarta. The Catholic school: Nedra Pickler of the Associated Press reports that "documents showed he enrolled as a Muslim" while at a Catholic school during first through third grades. Kim Barker of the Chicago Tribune confirms that Obama was "listed as a Muslim on the registration form for the Catholic school." A blogger who goes by "An American Expat in Southeast Asia" found that "Barack Hussein Obama was registered under the name ‘Barry Soetoro' serial number 203 and entered the Franciscan Asisi Primary School on 1 January 1968 and sat in class 1B. … Barry's religion was listed as Islam."

The public school: Paul Watson of the Los Angeles Times learned from Indonesians familiar with Obama when he lived in Jakarta that he "was registered by his family as a Muslim at both schools he attended." Haroon Siddiqui of the Toronto Star visited the Jakarta public school Obama attended and found that "Three of his teachers have said he was enrolled as a Muslim." Although Siddiqui cautions that "With the school records missing, eaten by bugs, one has to rely on people's shifting memories," he cites only one retired teacher, Tine Hahiyari, retracting her earlier certainty about Obama's being registered as a Muslim.

Barack Obama's public school in Jakarta. Koran class: In his autobiography, Dreams of My Father, Obama relates how he got into trouble for making faces during Koranic studies, thereby revealing he was a Muslim, for Indonesian students in his day attended religious classes according to their faith. Indeed, Obama still retains knowledge from that class: Nicholas D. Kristof of the New York Times, reports that Obama "recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them [to Kristof] with a first-rate accent."

Mosque attendance: Obama's half-sister recalled that the family attended the mosque "for big communal events." Watson learned from childhood friends that "Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque." Barker found that "Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers." One Indonesia friend, Zulfin Adi, states that Obama "was Muslim. He went to the mosque. I remember him wearing a sarong" (a garment associated with Muslims).

Piety: Obama himself says that while living in Indonesia, a Muslim country, he "didn't practice [Islam]," implicitly acknowledging a Muslim identity. Indonesians differ in their memories of him. One, Rony Amir, describes Obama as "previously quite religious in Islam."

Obama's having been born and raised a Muslim and having left the faith to become a Christian make him neither more nor less qualified to become president of the United States. But if he was born and raised a Muslim and is now hiding that fact, this points to a major deceit, a fundamental misrepresentation about himself that has profound implications about his character and his suitability as president.

I am warning everybody now. This latest dust up with Rev. Wright is all a coordinated setup by the Obama campaign staff!

Obama tried for the “It was all a mischaracterization of Rev. Wright. He’s a nice guy. I won’t denounce him.” That didn’t sell. His internal polling and focus groups showed that the public was not buying the story since Obama had been a loyal church member for 20 years. Obama was losing ground. And it would hurt him in November!

Obama needed to find a “quick exit”. But how do you denounce Wright when you have already refused to do so????? Well, you need Wright to say something even more outrageous and then denounce that. As Obama’s loyal counselor, mentor and Pastor who presided over his wedding and the baptism of his children, Rev. Wright was willing. So Pastor Jeremiah came out of hiding (where he had passed up some honorary awards) and calls a series of press conferences and issues some more outrageous comments.

Quick like a rabbit, Obama denounces the “latest statements”. He then denounces Sharpton. Then Obama calls a press conference to “answer the questions about Rev. Wright”. Gee. Would would have guessed?!?!?!?!?!?!

Thi is such an obvious sham, it is hilarious that anyone is buying into it! Obama merely wants to dispose of the Rev. Wright issue by denouncing him. But he needed a new provocation in order to justify it. And Wright gave him the opening. And undoubtedly they planned it together!

Gingrich is the funny one in all of this. He is asking, “Is Rev. Wright trying to undermine Obama”? Of course not! the Pastor is doing Obama a favor. Its a coordinated kabuki dance. Obama gets to dispose of Wright six months before the election and then refuse to discuss it till after the election. Then who do you think will be holding the bible when he is sworn in?

Why are you all missing this? Obama has the nomination locked. This is the final move to prepare for the general election. Dump WRight. Dump Sharpton. Dump Jesse. Then they all meet after the election and toss back a few scotches and call for women and cigars! Big con job on America! How else could Obama unload the “Rev. Wright scandal” from around his neck? He had to have a premise! So he asked Wright to fall on his sword, and Jeremiah complied!. Anyone buying into this is simply blind!

Wow, for being such a smart, educated, elite fellow who knows more about how each of us should live our lives, spend our money and flush our toilets, than we do,

his synapses sure take a long time (20 years) to process.

Obama is appalled when Wright attacks Obama. Not so appalled when he attacks America.

“Not the person I met 20 years ago”—
could have been something Hillary said circa
1989, as BC was starting to seriously launch
himself at the Presidency.
But she didn’t
The fact is they’re both liars, and believe their
entirely crass self-serving associations will never
have consequences.

It's all staged...a farce....with OBama and Wright the only ones in on the joke.

This has all the earmarks of Vince McMahon story line.

Ah, but Rev. Leroy of the Church of What’s Happenin’ Now already told us he’d do that — because ‘he does what Politicians Do’ i.e. lie their patooties off in order to get elected.

Too late, too late, she cried, waving her wooden leg....

NPR played Wright's G-d D—M America comments today.
Truly sickening to hear the whole clip.

“Obama: I Am ‘Outraged’ and ‘Angered’ By Wright’s Comments”

Oh bullshit.

And not one MSM reporter will ever ask him, if he’s so outraged, why he continued to go his sermons for 2 decades.

Wow this is interesting. Wright has his followers too. I wonder if enough of them will now feel alienated by Obama’s comments to the point where they might just stay at home during the few remaining primaries.

Sounds like we’d better hope Obama is the nominee as he will be the weaker of the two. Not that McCain is anything to get excited about. Though I suspect all this Wright damage will be forgotten by the media once the convention is over.
