Thanks to Libertas, I noticed a New York Times interview in which “Iron Man”’s Tony Stark, Robert Downey, Jr., admitted that though he doesn’t say it too loudly at dinner parties, he’s a conservative. This is a pretty big catch for our side: consider that Downey’s father, who made the radical underground film “Putney Swope,” was one of the most celebrated leftists in the film world in the 60s. Says Downey Jr:
“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”
“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” was a good one too.
It’s tough to take a guy with a mullet seriously.
Being a writer who’s worked in Hollywood for a while, I assure you there are more than a few closet conservatives. You can get away with, MAYBE, saying you’re a Libertarian because most people in showbiz think it’s only about legalized drugs (see Bill Maher, if you dare).
Supporting McCain might be a good half-step for some of Hollywood to take. Just the fact they’re not a beatific or glamorous Democrat is quite a risk.
I’m an idiot who has taken on roomfuls of Hollywood libs. Debate wise, it’s shooting fish in a you-know-what but it’s probably hurt my career. Sometimes, someone who witnessed the “discussion” and kept quiet throughout will later approach me, look around furtively, and say, in a near whisper “I agree with what you said.” I know, of course, that “outting” them would be akin to tattling on a pre-Stonewall gay (worse even).
Remember, libs are all about emotions and being liked. There’s little room for hard truths, uncomfortable realities, historical or philosophical acumen, sober thinking, etc. and lotsa space for hypocrisy, white guilt and hysteria. And exposure to the fly over states, natch.

Frankly, it isn't 'Liberals" who scare me. I actually wish we had more liberals. They can keep a Conservitive like me honest and on my game.
Our problem is that Hollywood, Academia and a damn sizable chunk of the media and bureaucracy have been taken over by hard core leftists who pretend to be 'liberals' and suck drama school Hollywood idiots along for the ride.
Old time libs like Hubert Humphrey, Scoop Jackson or even Tip O'Neil wouldn't have given those scum the time of day let alone supported them.
We always hear of the hard-core religious right control over the Republican party which is very far from the case. None of the pundits talk about the hard core Marxists who for all intents and purposes pull the strings of the Democrat party today.
Sadly, the definition of liberal and leftist are almost interchangeable nowadays. If there were still Scoop Jackson etc “liberals,” I might even be one myself. I used to consider myself a Libertarian until that party (more of a get-together, really) was hijacked by the Ron Paul, anti-war crowd. Personally, I’ve no problems with gay marriage, legalized drugs et al, but we need an even stronger country if we want to grant these (arguably) basic civil rights. I just don’t get the gays/feminists/human rights nut jobs who focus their animus on Bush (the make-believe devil they know) instead of Radical Islam/Totalitarian regimes (the real honest-to-god Devils they don’t).
This country’s turned into a bunch of surly high school kids — Bitching and rolling their eyes at Daddy while he’s busting his ass at work thus giving them the luxury to moan about inconsequentials.
Downey had [or perhaps now has] the potential to be a mega-star.

I had a mad crush on him back before Ally McBeal. I was so excited when he got the job to appear on the show. His first few seconds on the show did not disappoint.
He played another attorney, whose office Ally comes upon by mistake. When she introduces herself, he says, VERY quickly in the best Bob Hope tradition, “Ah, Ally McBeal! Catchy theme!...” And then goes on with the scripted lines, not missing half a beat.
I love the smart ones.
LOL. That is the whole reason I don’t see many movies anymore. Don’t want to be supporting a bunch of crazy leftist liberals.
