The Old Nazi Trick

Posted on 04/27/2008 4:08:28 PM PDT by freerepublic_or_die

In discussing the MSM and their predilection to lie, someone here at one of the posts commented, "The Old Nazi Trick" in reference to the aphorism, "Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes true". I sent him my comments on this subject that I thought were worth repeating.

The old Nazi trick
The aphorism "Repeat a lie enough and it becomes true" has been attributed to the Nazis, specifically Hermann Goering, Josef Goebbels, something quite easy to believe when considering the criminally insane lives they've so egregiously demonstrated to have lived.

I had come across a blog a few years ago written by a liberal, left wing Canadian nut job who was as vituperative and rabid an Americanhater I'd ever seen. He had posted the quote about repeating a lie often enough and it becomes true quite prominently on his site and having attributed it to the Nazis' Josef Goebbels.

I sent him a note asking if he had known the original source for that infamous, notorious quote was none other than his idealogical mentor,Vladimir Lenin, would he still leave the quote posted, credited to whom had initially inspired that saying, nearly thirty years before the Nazis ever began using it?? Needless to say I never got a reply but several weeks later when I checked the site, the quote was nowhere to be found.

Well, the tactic is alive and well, no matter who originated it. One of Hillary’s big lies is about her 35 years of experience preparing her to LEAD ON DAY ONE. This from a person who has never ever had any managerial or executive experience at any level of business or government. She has never ever run any kind of organization. Yet somehow she’s allegedly uniquely qualified because she has slept with Bill Clinton???????

Nazis and Communists learned a lot from each other about propaganda, depravity, hysteria, and every form of political immorality and subversion. Both groups make a practice of destroying anyone in their way (when they can) or else crudely propagandizing to undermine all opponents who cannot be immediately destroyed. Our Demagogues and MSM have also learned a lot from these totalitarian types.

Hitler did write about the Big Lie technique in Mein Kampf (1928). However he was not advocating it, but rather accusing “the Jews” of using it.

Similarly, Goebles in 1941 said, “The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.”

Those quotes have been widely repeated out of context.

I thought it was Lenin who invented the repeat a lie tactic and Goebbels (an evil genius) who came up with the idea that if you're going to tell a lie, don't tell a little lie. Tell a whopper because people will only chip at the periphery and the crux of the lie will remain.

The first time I ever encountered the sentiment in that quote was in 1972, when I read Mein Kampf, in which in my translation Hilter wrote: “When you lie tell big lies.”

At least once, based on my observation of Chelsea.

It would have been lovely to see this question posed in one of the debates. "Mrs Clinton besides sleeping with Bill Clinton what really qualifies you to be President of the United States?". And for the follow up question "And does this make Jennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky viable candidates as well?".

I would have watched that on pay-per-view if I knew that those questions was going to be asked. LOL.

Goebbels actually said a mix of the two sentiments (from Wikiquotes; http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Joseph_Goebbels, and other sources):

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

According to wikiquotes, this is "Slightly misquoted, actually denouncing Churchill in "Churchills Lügenfabrik" (i.e. Churchill's lie factory) in "Die Zeit ohne Beispiel" (i.e., A Unique Age)." It does appear that Goebbels was characterizing the British state under Churchill and not advocating the technique for Germany (though of course, they did just that).

Hitler himself used a similar phrase in Mein Kampf:

"the principle— which is quite true in itself — that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily,"

The nearest I've found to anything by Lenin is this: "A lie told often enough becomes truth"

Can't find any actual citations to any works of Lenin or speeches, despite it being all over the web. It is similar enough to what Goebbels definitely did say, that I'd infer Lenin did not say this, but over time it was just truncated from Goebbels and then falsely attributed to Lenin later. Of course, if an actual documented example from Lenin's works shows up, that would prove the opposite, that Goebbels used Lenin's phrase to describe Churchill.

From BILL MOYERS JOURNAL:

Reverend Wright says "That you tell a lie long enough that people start believing it."

That is right and Rev Wright knows how to tell that lie! And Bill Moyers and his cohorts have done just the same since the late 1960s.

BTW Wright is on Fox right now!

He says the NAACP is nonpolitical?

He salutes CNN!

The fool just keeps on digging his hole deeper saying it is a Black Church Thing and we typical white people just better get over it!

I see what you mean. There are quotations attributed to Lenin that he didn't actually say so you may be right; however, if I find something of this lie repeated enough in some Lenin biography, I'll try to give the citation.

But some here at FR think she looks like someone else close to Hillary, but I won’t go there now.
