WASHINGTON, April 27 (Reuters) - Barack Obama, struggling to win over white Democratic voters as he seeks to become the first black U.S. president, said in a Sunday television interview that race would not be a factor in November's election.
"Is race still a factor in our society? Yes. I don't think anybody would deny that," Obama said on "Fox News Sunday."
"Is that going to be the determining factor in a general election? No, because I'm absolutely confident that the American people -- what they're looking for is somebody who can solve their problems," the Illinois senator said in an interview taped on Saturday.
Obama and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, a New York senator, were focusing on Indiana, which along with North Carolina will be the next big tests on May 6 toward picking a presidential nominee to face Republican John McCain in November.
Obama is leading Clinton in the popular vote, states won and committed delegates to the party's nominating convention in August, but her recent victories in Pennsylvania and Ohio have raised questions about his ability to win white voters.
In Pennsylvania, Clinton won white union households and white Catholics -- two key Democratic blocs -- by about 70 percent to Obama's 30 percent. About one in seven Pennsylvania voters said race was an issue and that group voted overwhelmingly against Obama.
Obama said he had won many of those same voters in other states and after a Democratic nominee was decided, those voters would back the party's candidate against McCain.

Interesting that I see Obama stickers on lots of blacks’ cars. Are they voting for him because he’s qualified? I’d gladly vote for a black conservative for POTUS because if his/her views, not color.

I actually had a very short lived conversation with a 35ish year old white guy, driving a Toyota Prius with an “Obama’08” sticker on it at the gas station. I said “So Obama in ‘08”? He said “It’s time for a black president”. Got in his little scooter car and was gone. GUILTY WHITE BOY! That’s the kind of idiot that’s going to vote for this horses&*t of an excuse for a human being!
Obama is a horses a** that just happens to be black. The fact is, there are some honorable and astute blacks I would vote for in a heartbeat, if only they were running. So, Obama is partially correct, race is not an issue among educated citizens, color not withstanding; but race is an issue among most of the black population.
He knows he won’t have to play the race card. He has legions of MSM “journalists” who are always ready and willing to do it for him.

Laughable. A quick summary of Obama’s entire campaign might be: “Race is not an issue; I’m black; vote for me to prove you are not a racist.”
He has carried White Vote in the Biggest State - California. If not for immgres, who stuffed the ballot box for Hildabeast, in CA, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma, she would have been done long time ago.

Of course race is a factor: Among Black voters, newcomer Obama beats known brand Clinton by 90-10 solely on the basis of racial soldarity. If you think race is not a factor, watch the racist mob that is Wright’s “congregation” roar its approval when Wright mocks a murdered teenager as a “white girl from Alabama who went to Aruba to give it up.”
