How the South Won (This) Civil War (Prepare to be insulted)
Newsweek ^ | April 25, 2008 | Michael Hirsh

Posted on 04/26/2008 6:48:30 PM PDT by okie01

Southernism is taking over our national dialogue. Maybe it's time for the North to secede from the Union.

In the summer of 1863, Robert E. Lee led an ill-advised incursion into Pennsylvania. His army was defeated at Gettysburg, and thence afterward Lee beat a fighting retreat until the South lost the Civil War. One hundred and forty-five years later, the South--or what has become the South-Southwest--has won another kind of Civil War. It has transformed the sensibility of the country. It is setting the agenda for our political, social and religious mores--in Pennsylvania and everywhere else.

...the "radical nationalism" that has so dominated the nation's discourse since 9/11 traces its origins to the demographic makeup and mores of the South and much of the West and Southern Midwest--in other words, what we know today as Red State America. This region was heavily settled by Scots-Irish immigrants--the same ethnic mix King James I sent to Northern Ireland to clear out the native Celtic Catholics. After succeeding at that, they then settled the American Frontier, suffering Indian raids and fighting for their lives every step of the way. And the Southern frontiersmen never got over their hatred of the East Coast elites and a belief in the morality and nobility of defying them. Their champion was the Indian-fighter Andrew Jackson. The outcome was that a substantial portion of the new nation developed, over many generations, a rather savage, unsophisticated set of mores. Traditionally, it has been balanced by a more diplomatic, communitarian Yankee sensibility from the Northeast and upper Midwest. But that latter sensibility has been losing ground in population numbers--and cultural weight.

Yep, Obama was right. All us folks out here in flyover country -- from Barstow to Binghamton -- really ARE racist, Bible-thumping hicks with gun racks in our pick-up trucks.

But it's not our fault. It's our forebearers' fault. And Andy Jackson's.

Michael Hirsh appears to be even more of an arrogant -- yet ignorant -- elitist than BHO.

How I long for the time when there were only two kinds of Americans — damn Yankees and fuc*ing Rebels. Together they formed the Greatest Generation.

Andy Jackson is easily one of the best president’s.

It is funny to listen to a bunch of damn yankees make empty threats to secede. It isn’t like they have the guts, even if I wouldn’t mind seeing them go.

Then how in the name of all that is holy did someone that belongs in that Liberal, Eastern menatality win the Republican nomination?

How I long for the time....

Back then I would not have to have been embarrassed to admit that I am a North-Easterner.

And now we've got to put up with elitist left-wing intellectuals who don't much like America.

Or us.

This clown not only insults Southerners and Westerners but his very identity insults the Easterners who still feel their heart rates rise with every playing of the Star Spangled Banner.

It is funny to listen to a bunch of damn yankees make empty threats to secede.

They were the first to suggest secession back in 1814 at the Hartford Convention.

I’ll bet $20 to FreeRepublic that Michael Hirsh lives in a very large liberal city and that he has zero conservative friends. I’ll also bet that he rarely if ever visits anything south of Philidelphia.

Wonder how they'd feel about a US president sending tanks to turn their guns on the bathhouse where they signed the acts of secession?

What I find very ironic is that in the end, the former Confederate states could have the economic last laugh.

Think about it:

1) How come all the newest automobile assembly lines are in the South?
2) The South could literally save the world from its current rice shortage issues. Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and eastern Texas--thanks to access to modern farming methods--could grow almost any type of rice on a scale that would be the envy of the world.
3) A LOT of Northerners are moving to the South to retire, sick and tired of long, cold winters.
4) There's still a lot of oil and natural gas yet to be exploited off the coast of the South.

I grew up in the north during my childhood, then moved to Georgia for work. I lived in Ga for 10 years and these people are the kindest people That I have ever met. I bet none of yew strangers ever get invited fer viddles. I have so many times that it made think twice about how I feel about people. There is one thing I know when in Atlanta, Bring a gun or a machete. Heck, Otherwise I love the place.

Does this Michael Hirsh ever get his head out of his navel and visit the planet? Please try to keep up with this century Micheal.

Will someone investigate the makers of those tainted immunizations? The evidence of subtle autism is becoming more and more prevalent.

Hey Ray,

There’s a vein of natural gas that runs under my 5 duplexes in Texas that will be drilled soon, can’t wait to start getting my royalty checks... My parent’s friends have 35 acres in Joshua, TX that same vein runs under, they are getting royalty checks of over $30K PER MONTH. I’m so happy for them.
