Constitution Party stunner: Chuck Baldwin KOs firebrand Alan Keyes
Convening its national convention in Kansas City today, the Constitution Party picked radio talk-show host Chuck Baldwin over former Ambassador Alan Keyes as its 2008 presidential candidate.
The pick was seen as something of an upset, given Keyes' higher national profile. Known for his fiery stem-winders, Keyes is a two-time GOP presidential candidate who abandoned the Republican Party this month to join the Constitution Party, which believes in limited government and is committed to ending abortion and bringing American troops home from Iraq.
But Baldwin's roots in the Constitution Party run deeper. He was the party's 2004 vice-presidential candidate, and party members said his stands were more in line with party thinking.
"Chuck is the real deal," said Jim Clymer, the party's national chairman.
Still, the two waged a fierce battle described as the most contentious in the party's 16-year history. Baldwin wound up winning easily on a 384-126 vote. The Missouri and Kansas delegations basically split their votes between the two.
"They just rejected the most qualified man to be president," said Tom Hoefling of Lohrville, Iowa, Keyes' national political director. "Chuck Baldwin will have no impact on this election whatsoever."
The party's immediate tasks, Clymer said, are raising money and gaining ballot access in each state. The party now has qualified to be on the ballots of 21 states. He expects the eventual total to top 40 and include Kansas and Missouri.
"We're always short on money," Clymer said.
In his acceptance speech, Baldwin said his presidency would result in the ending of illegal immigration, abortion, the streamlining of the federal government, the tapping of oil reserves in Alaska and withdrawal from Iraq.
"We will stop the international meddling...this international empire-building," Baldwin said.
When he takes office, Baldwin said, "The new world order comes crashing down!"
He pledged not only to pull out of the United Nations, but to push the international organization out of New York.
"The U.N. is going to have to find themselves another (home) because their rent is up in New York City," he said.
He said he would phase out the Internal Revenue Service and end the paying of personal income taxes. He said the country should return to the gold standard.
Home schoolers, he said, would have the best friend they ever had in the White House.
Too bad, this is the Constitution Party’s continual slip into obscurity.
I pretty much thought obscurity was were they were all the time. They can’t get more than 1/2% or so in a national election so I don’t see them as ever being a contender.
Actually, they were already "theocratic" when they were the "Taxpayers Party." They've always been a "palaeo," Birchite/reconstructionist front.
To me, it just seems a lot worse lately. Just the other week, they issued a complaint about a pastor who said a prayer to congress because he ended the prayer ‘In God’s Holy Name’ instead of ‘In Jesus’ Name’.. they tried to make a big issue out of it.. talk about twisted...
With the make up of the national electorate it is almost impossible for a small segment to be a major factor. They may can do so on a local level but it almost necessitates a large party crossing the spectrum of views to get someone elected on a state or national level today. The Libertarian Party does try and place a candidate in many of the slots at the local/state level and once in a while does get someone elected.

I'm convinced it's a form of "identity." They believe the Constitution is holy writ and probably that the thirteen original colonies were the "tribes of Israel," and act as if they thought Thomas Jefferson was a "born-again chr*stian." Of course, this is hard to believe (Jefferson's heterodoxy is well-known), so maybe they're just dishonest.
The ultimate doctrine of "palaeoconservatism" is henotheism--a separate "gxd" and a separate "truth" for each nation, with no overarching objective Truth of any kind (that would be "one world government!"). Therefore America is made into a special, holy country with a unique covenant with the (American) "gxd." Of course, this is far from unusual. The "palaeo" Right in all countries do this with their particular heritage.
This is why "reconstructionists" reject a literal earthly messianic kingdom ruled from Jerusalem. To them America is the kingdom of J*sus and ruled by him from Heaven. Besides, any messiah who rules from Jerusalem would be a foreigner!).
Alan actually addressed this henotheistic tendency of the palaeo right in his remarks to his supporters after losing the nomination.

Alan simply quoted a roman policy where, after taking a city, they disallow payment of taxes by the citizens of that city — ‘for a generation or two.’
It was an idea that had some legal legs.
Obviously — for various reasons — the analogy does not hold.
Alan also understands that it would not be practical.
But as a schooler — he was considering it in the abstract.
However, Alan HAS unequivocally stated that, when he is elected President, he would abolish the income tax — for ALL Americans.
I presume you would support that idea, Right?
Abolishing the income tax is One of Alan’s top most priorities; Second only to restoring the constitutional rights of the unborn.

The ABM treaty was signed with the Soviet Union, which no longer existed.

EV is exactly correct. There is a Constitutionally prescribed method to leave treaties, you can't just dump a treaty as the Constitution prescribes any agreed to treaties as high law. To leave a treaty, like changing any law, requires it passing the House, Senate, and being signed by the President. Just trashing a treaty would generally fall under unified executive theory and, in theory, is what the Constitution Party opposes. President Bush was not in the wrong, however with leaving the ABM treaty because those whom we signed the treaty with, no longer exists (Soviet Union) and thus, it was no longer valid anyway.

It does have a familiar ring to it.
Alan Keyes on McCain’s VP short list is one thing I like about McCain. It may be the only thing at this point. McCain cannot stand free speech and will he ever see the error of his ways?
Ambassador Keyes has helped a lot of folks. What have you done lately besides insulting him?
I don’t regret one minute helping him. Unlike yourself, he is an honorable individual.
