Comprehensive roundup of the event with multiple links to reports, helicopter shots and a shot of rescue personnel working on the victim. A bit too blurry to be gory but be warned - not the nicest subject matter.

You know, the report says the man had his legs severed at the knees by the shark, but the picture seems to show a man with feet lying on the beach.
Last I checked, feet were below the knees.

This is why I don't go far at all into the ocean. If I was meant to be in the same water with sharks I would have been born a dolphin.

I’m in San Diego - and I heard a local report regarding the man’s condition.
Evidently, one of the legs was shredded from the knee down to the ankle, while the other leg had a very deep gash in it down to the bone.
According to the EMT’s the guy had almost bled to death before they pulled him out of the water. The blood loss was so great there was no way he could have survived.
Very sad.

I made a deal with sharks. I don’t go in their water if they don’t come down my street.

Although the “experts” on the artsy fartsy channels like to tell us that sharks don’t eat people, this is why I haven’t been in the ocean since I saw “Jaws” in the theater back in the 70s. I have spent a lot of time in Grizzly country though.

Didn't read the article, but on the news it said he was swimming with a group of people. It also said he was a veterinarian! I know if it was me I'd be thinking of all the animals I'd helped and now I'm getting eaten by one. And thinking to myself - well, so much for Karma. Stupid shark.

From the blog:
Southern California has been awash in White Shark sightings since the beginning of March. Check out the details at Pacific Coast Shark News. Local news has been poo-pooing these sitings as hoaxes. Obviously not. This sounds like either a White Shark - likely, due to all the sightings - or a Bull/Tiger Shark.

Prayers for the man and his family.

I've lived in FL for most of my life; I've seen plenty, caught several, and have been bumped a few times by the smaller fellas scooting through the surf, but then again we don't have great whites cruising the surf looking for seals. The closest I've been to shark aggression was on a hot summer night we were setting up for a little lazy shark fishing (shark fishing is lazy work once you're set up.) I just threw out the chum block (a big hunk of frozen chum in a mesh bag) on about a 15’ rope and cracked open a beer while I dangled my legs in the water off the back deck of the boat. Normally it takes a while to draw them in, but one must have been right nearby - he grabbed the whole bag of chum and shook it back and forth like a crazed pit bull. I did some sort of backwards somersault twist back into the boat while everyone else was having a good hearty chuckle.

Ocean kayaking or surfing is scary enough but swimming? That falls in line with bicycle riders who ride bikes on narrow well used roads.
