****UPDATE 4 From Swim at Your Own Risk****
Victim Pic in. Contrary to earlier reports he still appears to have legs but they don't look good.

Yeah, I stay in shallow water and only swim during the day. I feel more comfortable if there’s lots of dolphins around, cause I’ve heard that dolphins like to avoid shark-prone areas and sharks generally steer clear of large groups of dolphins because they’re more than a match for a shark put together.
Excerpt from FOX News:
The victim one of a group of triathlete swimmers training in the ocean ....
The victim has been identified as Dave Martin, 66, a retired veterinarian....
“He had very severe injuries to both legs,” Abelman told FOX. He said the wound was a single bite across both legs.
A marine biologist told a beachside news conference Friday that the animal was “almost certainly a great white shark.”
“I was told that the victim was pushed up out of the water in a violent attack,” said Richard Rosenblatt of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “That’s typical great white behavior.”
Rosenblatt said the bite was likely “clean and massive” and believes the animal was a female.....
4 years ago there was a woman swimming in the waters off Avila Beach in Central Ca. She made the mistake of swimming with seals. She was attacked by a great white. It got her in the hip area. There were lifeguards going through some tests and a couple of them swam out to try to rescue her and she was dead before they got her to shore..she bled out. It only takes about 2 minutes to beed out if the shark gets an artery.
We have sightings here every summer..and when there is..the beaches are closed..people can go to the beach but don’t go in the water.
Remember those Land Sharks skits from Saturday Night Live in the 70's. Classic.
I spent a lot of time in the surf in years past, very scary.
Well the odds are very much in your favor. This poor bastard bought the losing lottery ticket of all time.
But yes, it is scary and you have every reason to be scared. The ocean is a scary place and you take your chances every time you wade away from shore.
A lot of shark attacks take place in about 4’ of water, from what I’ve read.
I’m not scared of many things. But sharks scare the h- out of me.
Yep judging by the damage evident in the pic this shark had a very wide mouth. Females get much larger than males. The shredding indicates violent shaking. The surge out of the water is classic seal predation behavior: hard hit at full speed.
This shark was after dinner. Other reports suggest he was swimming behind the group. That's also common: Whites pick off stragglers. Never swim alone. This shark probably stalked them for quite a while before deciding which to eat.
Southern California has been awash in White Shark sightings since the beginning of March. Check out the details at Pacific Coast Shark News. Local news has been poo-pooing these sitings as hoaxes. Obviously not. This sounds like either a White Shark - likely, due to all the sightings - or a Bull/Tiger Shark.
That was posted this morning. It has been decided, since, that those waters were too cold for tigers or bulls. They all believe White Shark now.
Prayers for the man and his family.
“Never swim alone...”
Back when I was younger and (more) stupid I scuba-dived off a big guest boat on the Great Barrier Reef. (10 minute “instruction” on scuba diving!) My friend left after 3 minutes in the water and went back to the boat. There were other swimmers in the general area, but not that I can really recall seeing any. Saw a big shark and tried to swim closer for a better look (I think I had read somewhere that if you’re not at the surface there isn’t much danger!?) Luckily it just kept swimming away from me. I guess I’ll have to wait for some other episode of life to win a Darwin Award. The giant 6-foot long clams were pretty cool too.
Well at least you have a chance of escaping if you bring along someone who runs slower than you.
Dr. David Martin
The difference is that a 454 round or a solid rifle bullet will put a grizzly down. Those things just piss sharks off.

Do you not fly in airplanes, because you are not a bird and don’t have wings?
How about ride in a car...after all, only a gazelle can run so fast for so far..
