About 100 people joined the Rev. Ken Hutcherson outside Mt. Si High School this morning to protest the Day of Silence being observed inside the school. The group prayed and sang as a noisy group of counter protesters tried to drown them out by beating on drums and chanting, "Go Home."
Hutcherson, who had called for 1,000 "prayer warriors" to join him in protesting a national day to call attention to the harassment of lesbian and gay students, said his group was not against homosexuals or the Day of Silence.
"We're against giving an entire school day to one club to push an agenda that is not about education," he said.
About 80 parents and supporters of the high school's Gay Straight Alliance stood quietly outside the school as students arrived. Some wore rainbow tie-dyed scarves and one former student waved a rainbow flag.
"We want to let students in the GSA know they have support in the community," said Lucinda Hauser, a parent of a Mount Si student.
Jane Storrs, another parent and a former school nurse, said she supports the Day of Silence "as a forum to discuss the bullying that goes on in high school."
The group, whose members said they did not want to confront Hutcherson or his supporters, left around 8 a.m.
Almost one-third of students didn't attend classes. Principal Randy Taylor said 495 out of a student body of 1,410 weren't at school, including 85 athletes whose parents asked that they be excused because of their personal beliefs.

I thought they were going to be silent all day.
YAHOOO! You go Ken!
I may even consider forgiving you for dissing on my NE Patriots!
Day of Silence, as stupid as it is, would be more tolerable if it was for discussing bullying in regards to EVERYONE. As it is, Day of Silence is strictly for gays.
THAT'S why it's so obnoxious.
Bullying applies to a gazillion kids - the ones that are fat, ugly, short, unpopular, dorky, whatever.
The Day of Silence is all about normalizing gayness.
Day of Silence = Fag Day?
No such luck. We only wish...
The Christians should have taken the opportunity , since the Gay supporters were silent, to lecture them on the FATAL HEALTH HAZARDS of the gay lifestyle since neither the media nor the faculty will.
to respond to this idiocy, i propose a "day of flatulence" to show support and brotherhood with liberals.
every time a liberal opens his/her mouth, a student should respond with a blow of the trumpet. ;)
:) Big Smile! That's what is so ironic about the DOS. I taught in public schools for years until I couldn't take it anymore. The DOS students were technically silent but extremely disruptive. They would hold up signs, pass notes, roll their eyes, etc. They were the most obnoxious silent students I ever had. I used to have normal students who would be silent all year and never cause a problem. But the DOS is truly all about disruption. A small minority decides that no one gets to be educated that day.
A couple of cans of Bush's Baked Beans should do the trick.
Who has that graphic?
how sad that school officials are so intellectually ignorant or dishonest that they deny the simple fact
which is not even about “discrimination”, “tolerance” or “diversity”
but, about giving one political agenda school time they would not give another
Personally, I recommend an annual Year Of Silence...
It is awful that they have taken a symbol of a promise from God and turned it into a symbol that celebrates a perversion and deviant sexual behavior.
Apparently they can’t even get that part right.
Actually, it's a cover for having non-student gays on the campus, leading groups of students and propagandizing them and promoting homosexuality, to prepare the ground for individual recruitment.
Most surveyed gay men and women alike report that their first actual sexual encounters were with adult homosexuals who approached them.
Homosexuals know a terrible thing, that if they get to a kid first, he's "queer for life" -- or just about. First experiences have a powerful orienting effect that homosexual apologists will go to the wall rather than admit is in play.
That's why they pull up trees, scream and yell "phobe" and threaten federal lawsuits, whenever anyone points a finger at the big red button marked "recruitment". That is the essence, the fons et origo, of most homosexuality. Some is probably innate -- but essentialism is a legal strategy and a jurisprudential ploy based on the civil rights movement's experience, and not the real reason for most homosex, howbeit that a lot of gays are totally committed to it politically. But essentialism is a legal fraud, for the most part. Which is why gays defend it so bitterly. To borrow a historical analogy, essentialism is the Little Round Top of the homosexual political war against normality.
Every day should be a Day of Silence for the gays&Lesbians, as I for one am sick of hearing (about) them!
I propose that these “Day of Silence” types get a bill for one day of lost education. I pay taxes to support the school, and they wasted my money. They owe me money.
Can they be the subject of a class action suit as a conspiracy to defraud or some such? Someone has to pay for their nonsense, and I resent it being me.
LOL! One of my teen daughters said the same thing you posted. She had a lesbian couple in her band class and she said they NEVER shut up and wished they’d be silent all the time.
I heard someone (a comedian?) say something like:
It used to be “the love that dare not speak its name”.
Now ya can’t get em to shut the *&%@ up!
