ABC News' Jonathan Greenberger and Teddy Davis Report: In an interview set to appear in Saturday's Financial Times, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean says that he thinks the Democratic race for president will come down to superdelegates' perception of electability.
"I think the race is going to come down to the perception in the last six or eight races of who the best opponent for McCain will be. I do not think in the long run it will come down to the popular vote or anything else," said Dean.
Dean added that he thinks it is "very unlikely" that the superdelegates will elevate a candidate who is trailing in pledged delegates and the popular vote before adding that "it is possible" and that superdelegates have "every right to do it."
Asked about speculation that a senior party figure like former Vice President Al Gore or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could prevail on one of the candidates to withdraw after June 3, Dean dismissed the scenario as "total bullshit."
Dean has gone out of his way to be impartial in the 2008 race. His early opposition to the Iraq war lines up with Obama, and he criticized the Clinton '90s in "You Have the Power," the book he wrote after his failed '04 White House bid.
But his comments to the Financial Times are interesting because they play into the Clinton campaign's closing argument: that uncommitted superdelegates should feel free to buck the pledged-delegate leader and choose the candidate perceived to be most electable at the end of the nominating process.
Well.
If it comes down to electability, the Dems may as well just go home and not show up at all for the Election in November.
Concede now!
Sounds like he needs to share a waffle with obama.
That’s a HUGE Statement. ELECTIBILITY is Hildabeast’s ENTIRE CASE. She has NOTHING ELSE.
If Dean said that, and out of remaining 300 uncomitted delegates, DNC insiders represent about 250 of those, then it is very possible that Obambi is toast. Again, he didn’t say NO WAY would the Popular Vote and Pledge Delegate lead would be overturned.
Klintons never lose.
Dean who?
I’ll say they’ll choose the hildabeast.
I caught it too.
And one of the best-kept secrets of all time.
< Cue the mandolin music. > Sounds like Howard got the proverbial offer he couldn’t refuse.
They must think they have enough demonizing and hate-mongering power that they can herd the blacks BACK on the reservation so giving to Hildabeast is worth it.
I think they think even if they lost 30-40% of the Black Vote, they could still win because that vote DOES NOT MATTER in any of the battle ground states.
They also know that its not like Blacks would vote Republican, especially when all they need is ONE ANECDOTE to create a RACIST VIBE.
They already have plenty of material to work with. One of McCain’s pastor-endorsement described flooding of New Orleans as God’s anger against Sin. That can easily be portrayed as a RACIST statement by media. That would at least preven Blacks from voting Republican.
Second, part of their calculation would be that the NEW VOTERS, the youth, they never show up anyway. So even if they don’t show up this time, it would like any other Election.
In long term, they can program them to hate Republicans and damage can be controlled.
Told everyone, don’t revive Hildabeast.....effing Rush and other losers, I hope she gets his fatt ass for something.
Seriously, I smell a deal on the table. Hillary as the Presidential candidate, Obama as the Veep. But for FOUR YEARS ONLY. Then Hillary steps aside, which of course, she won't do.
Hillary will be the next POTUS. Thanks, Rush.
This McCain pastor thing really makes me angry. Hagee is not his pastor, never has been, and most likely never will be. What lies!
You haven’t seen nothing yet.
But he tied himself to him big time.....told George S. on ABC, he is proud of his Endorsement.....but against any anti-anything statements.....
So it would hard for him to distance himself from Hagee if that issue is being exploited.
When Dems sense trouble on Reservations, they always revert to fear-mongering and I don’t expect anything different this time. As a matter of fact, it would be the WORST EVER because the danger to Dem party is the WORST EVER.
Been called Terrorist, Muslim, Racist, Elitist, Not Ready, Light Weight....by Klintons...as far as they know.
Don’t think Michelle would let him accept it. Women don’t forgive or forget.
However, I think he would give a rousing speech to bring the party together and remain loyal.
Yeah, it looks like Dean is about to throw Obama under the bus, based on his poor performance in Pennsylvania and the upper mid-West.
It would be a priceless move destroying the faith of their most loyal voters maybe even for good, what a hoot.
Well it's not Jimmy Dean the sausage guy, but your question brings up a modification of the old saying about "things you don't want to watch being produced" - Sausage, Laws, and Democratic Presidential candidates.
