Less than one week after threatening to conduct an uprising against the Iraqi government and US forces, Muqtada al Sadr, the leader of the Mahdi Army, has called for his fighters to maintain the self-imposed cease-fire. The US and Iraqi military continue to strike at Sadr’s Mahdi Army in Baghdad. Ten “criminals” were killed in strikes in Sadr City, making 82 Mahdi fighters killed in the six days since Sadr threatened renewed violence.
In a statement read during the Friday prayers at the Al Hikma mosque in Sadr City, Sadr called for his militia to halt the fighting. “You have been patiently committed to the freeze decision and magnificently obeyed your leader,” Sadr statement read, according to Voices of Iraq. “I hope you retain your patience and faith.”
Sadr also said he did not threaten the Iraqi government with “open war” last weekend, but was directing his threat against Coalition forces. “The open war we threaten is meant against the occupiers,” Sadr said. “There is no war between us and our Iraqi brothers regardless of their sect or ethnicity.”
But Sadr then seemingly contradicted himself when he demanded the government “rein in the militias infiltrated” into the security forces. “I give the Iraqi government the last warning that we would wage an open war until liberation if it failed to rein in the militias infiltrated into it,” Sadr said.

The losing side usually asks for a halt in fighting so they can regroup/resupply.

U.S. Says New Find Shows Iran Still Sends Arms to Iraq

The U.S. military says it has found caches of newly made Iranian weapons in Iraq, leading senior officials to conclude Tehran is continuing to funnel armaments into Iraq despite its pledges to the contrary.
Officials in Washington and Baghdad said the purported Iranian mortars, rockets and explosives had date stamps indicating they were manufactured in the past two months. The U.S. plans to publicize the weapons caches in coming days. A pair of senior commanders said a presentation was tentatively planned for Monday.
According to the front page of the Wilmington Star today, Sadr has pretty much defeated the US Military and is toppling the Iraqi governmemt.
No halt, no cease fire... if they lay down their arms, put them in cells where they will never again see the light of day.. if they don’t kill them where they stand... end this little $#17heads reign of terror.
Obliterate his “army”, leave the bodies where they fall, so that any other idiots who think following this lunatic will result in any sort of end other than death, see exactly how wrong they are.

I wonder what the morale effect on Sadr’s minions would be if Malaki offered to accept their unconditional surrender.
I believe he’s in Iran too, but of course he’ll pretend he was on the front-line all along. It’s hard to be a hero like daddy was when you are - in fact - cowering in a spider-hole in Tehran.
Or maybe he’ll return to Iraq once he’s been to a good dentist. I mean, ewwh.
