Los Angeles 'is a Third World city'
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 23/04/2008 | Staffer

Los Angeles is becoming a "Third World city" with immigrants making up half its workforce, says a new study.

A third of immigrants have not graduated from high school and 60 per cent do not speak English fluently, the Migration Policy Institute found.

It said this left immigrants ill-equipped to fill California's fastest-growing occupations, such as computer software engineering and nursing. The organisation added that as the so-called baby boomers reach retirement age, a similar pattern will spread across the US.

Ernesto Cortes Jr, of the Industrial Areas Foundation, a think-tank that specialises on social change, claimed Los Angeles was at a crossroads.

"The question is are we going to be a 21st century city with shared prosperity, or a Third World city with an elite group on top and most on near poverty wages?" he said.

You've ducked, danced, bullsh*tted, kickeded up dust, cut and pasted endless BS...

You have done everything but answer the simple 2 line questions.

I learned long ago to be very suspect and beware of those that respond with long winded answers to very simple questions.

You fit that profile perfectly.

I've ran into petty criminals that polish and deliver BS better than you slick.

I answered your question, but you don’t like the answer. As I said, that was my final response. I have wasted too much time already dealing with an idiot. You need to get out of your mother’s basement and see what the real world is like.

First of all, I have never and will never live in LA or any other place like it. For many reasons, I feel like a rat in a cage in cities like that (spent to much time on the Plains to feel comfortable in a concrete camp like LA or Chicago for to long).

But the author is partially right, but partially wrong. My boss grew up in Brazil. In a suburb just out side of a big city down there. He has said a few times that he sees the US sliding into the same stuff that many of the cites in Brazil had. High crime, corrupt government, decaying infrastructure, etc.

We aren't there yet, but we are getting closer. It isn't just the illegal immigrants (though they have sped the process along in places), but many natural citizens are part of the problem. We have stopped being a nation of “Can do!” and become a nation of waiting for the next hand out. Look at all the trailer trash that was still in FEMA trailers over a year after Katrina! THESE WERE NOT JUST BLACKS OR MEXICANS!

The policies of the last 40 years have built up two generations of people who honestly don't want to work, and would rather tear the place down. It is across ethnic groups and areas.

Your comments are more balanced than most I’ve seen here. Urban decay has been going on for a long time, and there is shared responsibility in this.

I understand how you feel about cities. I’m a country girl at heart, I believe, just happen to be stuck in a city and making the best of it. I look for the good, and sometimes I find it:).

So, what say you? You never came back after dropping this article-bomb from what appears to be your favorite publication. I have the feeling you don’t even live on this side of the pond.

Wandered around to much to say “It is because of X people that the nation is going to pot!”. We have a lot of welfare “families” that are white, and alot of crime gangs that are also.

You’re not allowed to say that here, too sensible.

Jeez, I don’t live on that side of the pond, eh? How’d ya work that out Einstein? Maybe because I make no secret of the fact perhaps.

I must check the site rules again to find out which pond sides are acceptable when posting articles.

Right, you live in a third world country.
Well, Mr. PotatoHead, I live in the U.S.A.: not a third world country, and Los Angeles is not a 3rd world city, no matter what your precious favorite newspaper says to fill space.
