Chelsea Clinton addresses question about Lewinsky
Associated Press ^ | April 22, 2008 | MIKE BAKER

Chelsea Clinton suggested Tuesday that she doesn't believe voters should consider how her mother responded to Bill Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky when making judgments about her character.

Clinton has repeatedly refused to discuss the issue when campaigning for her mother, Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton, calling questions about the Lewinsky matter none of the public's business.

But speaking Tuesday at Duke University, she answered a question from a student who said the issue was important for voters who wanted to assess the character of candidates in the race.

"I agree that character is very important," Chelsea Clinton said during a speech at a packed student commons. "But when I think about character for a public official, I think about how people respond to both successes and failures in their public lives."

Clinton said she defines her mother's character by issues such as health care and how her failed reform efforts early in her husband's presidency didn't stop her from continuing to advocate on the issue.

"You don't seem very happy with that answer," Clinton said. "But it really matters to me that out of her efforts from the 1990s came the children's health insurance program."

Cliff Satell, 19, a freshman and a Republican, said afterward he thought Clinton dodged his question. He said Hillary Clinton's handling of the scandal offered voters a look into her character.

"How she handled the Lewinsky scandal ... I think is relevant to how she will handle future crises and future situations," Satell said.

Chelsea Clinton has faced similar questions on her tours of campuses around the country. She declining to answer a similar question during a campaign stop at North Carolina State University last month, saying it was not the public's business.

The question should be about how her mother responded to Bill Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky while dodging sniper fire.

A good follow-up question might have been: “I am glad to hear that you do believe that character counts. What do you think of your father’s? (And Chelsea, please do not tell me that these issues are private—not when you have co-presidents seeking many terms of office).”

...when making judgments about her character.

I want to know if Hillary heard the constant moaning all the way upstairs.

Uh, Chelsea? Your mother went on TV and blamed the Republicans and right-wing Americans; in effect, she LIED about the facts of your father’s infidelity. In addition, she has lied about the origins of her name, dodging sniper fire in Bosnia, her role in the Irish peace process, her knowledge of the Rose law firm billing records, Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate, and most recently, the tragic death of a mother and infant.

In other words, this is a woman who wouldn’t be believed if her tongue came notarized. What precisely WOULD you have us judge her on?

I think Chelsea tries to dodge the issue. In Clintonspeak, talking about the public lives of officials or candidates means that the private lives are off limits to her. This builds on the answers previously that what happened in the Lewinsky matter was none of anyone’s business.

To me, it speaks volumes about the character of Hillary Clinton that she stayed with a serial philanderer. To an alleged feminist icon such as Hillary Clinton, marital infidelity is a serious issue, an issue that a good feminist will not simply just tolerate and let it go.

Or, did Hillary stay with Bill because of some half baked arrangement they have, that they have to put on a good front because Hillary was going to have her own political career someday???????? But if that’s the case, what does that say about the character of Hillary Clinton?

Let's not forget that, in addition to attacking the ‘Vast Right Wing Conspiracy’ in the Lewinsky matter, she was an integral part of trying to destroy other women who were abused and used by her dysfunctional, rapist husband. She is a codependent in the strictest sense of that term.

And that's the nicest thing about her.

Does Chelsea still work for the hedge fund? Who is paying her bills to travel around and shill for her mother? Is the hedge fund holding her six figure job open for her for when this long national nightmare of a campaign is over?

Why does a good Democrat girl like Chelsea work for an evil hedge fund, anyway? Why doesn’t she work for a politically correct organization of some kind? Didn’t mommy and daddy have enough clout to get her such a job? The hedge fund was the best they could do?

She is every bit the Hildebeest we say she is.

Someone needs to tell Chelsea she’s right, character is important. If her parents HAD any, we’d certainly use it as a barometer for judgment.

It means absolutely nothing as she intended. As long as dems are flapping their lips it really doesn't matter what they say the DBM will just ignor it or marvel at their ability to totally twist context. Mostly they ignor it because if they did their jobs correctly the dems wouldn't survive one day!
