Officials say the government will replace its highly touted "virtual fence" on the Arizona-Mexico border with new towers, radars, cameras and computer software.
They're scrapping the brand-new $20 million system because it doesn't work sufficiently.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff officially signed off on the program just two months ago.
But with the decision, Customs and Border Protection officials are acknowledging that the program to detect illegal immigrants doesn't work well enough to keep or to continue tweaking.
Critics say the system is highly flawed, but officials say it's only a demonstration project.

How hard is it to build a 30 foot tall fence and then just shoot them if they try to come over the fence?

“Officials say the government will replace its highly touted “virtual fence” on the Arizona-Mexico border with new towers, radars, cameras and computer software.”
And what is that(”new towers, radars, cameras and computer software”) but another version of a virtual fence?
Put up a real, non-virtual fence.

It sure demonstrates to me why we need a real fence.

what is so hard to figure out about A FREAKING FENCE!!!! It's a physical barrier against intrusion. It's a symbolic effort to re-establish the sovereignty of the USA.

Is this the first time the gummint has admitted it made a mistake? Is this the first time a gummint program has been abolished?
Probably not, but it sometimes seems like it.

It demonstrates to me why we need new people in government.

That sounds promising. It actually sounds like they really care.

Why haven’t we built a real fence, supported by the high-tech assets.

Remember when congress was all up in arms when a bunch of billionaires from Dubai wanted to buy a couple of ports? Meanwhile our Northern and Southern borders remain porous enough to allow illegals and terrorists to enter at will. What a bunch of hypocrites.

How about they try a REAL fence?
Virtual fences are only meant to gull virtual idiots.

I think scrapping the virtual fence is stupid toounless there is a lot of redundant camera coverage ncorporated into the real fence.
Smugglers and terrorists are determined and it is going to take a WELL OBSERVED barrier to stop these folks.

We've seen all this before. If my freeper memory serves me right, it's called
adverse possession. It won't be long before some half-wit World Court Judge will be giving Mexico a wink and telling us we gave up our right to the border when we refused to put up a fence. And then of course there'll be the foot paths crossing the property....

Sometimes I just don't know whether to **** or go blind! I'll never have $20 million to throw around -- let alone throw away -- in my entire life, but the gubbermint?
Hey! It's not OUR money!!!
Excuse me, I feel the need to go bang my head against the wall for a while.

"It won't be long before some half-wit World Court Judge will be giving Mexico a wink and telling us we gave up our right to the border when we refused to put up a fence." Quite possible. And once they get their very own Aztlan, they'll turn it into Tijuana North. Then they'll blame the Gringos for all moving out and stiffing them with their own cultural incompetence. And so it goes with the Neo-Marxists. Love your tag line by the way.
