Soldiers from the 1st Iraqi Army discovered the cache during the search phase of Operation Charge of the Knights. The cache consisted of a large number of weaponry with Iranian markings.
The cache included a 240 mm high-explosive war-head and approximately 160 mortars. Some of which were less than 12 months old.
The cache also contained approximately 25 artillery shells, more than 20 complete improvised explosive devices, large quantities of IED components, several explosively formed projectiles and dozens of grenades and fuses. Also included was more than 20 blocks of plastic explosives, homemade anti-personnel mines packed with ball bearings, hundreds of meters of detonation cord, improvised rocket launching rails, and thousands of rounds of small-arms ammunition.
Operation Charge of the Knights is ongoing with the Iraqi Army working in conjunction with the Iraqi Police to maintain pressure on Special Groups and criminal elements by denying them sanctuaries and safe havens through Basra and Iraq.
“Operation Charge of the Knights has been an Iraqi planned and executed operation from the very start,” said Lt. Col. Neil Harper, deputy public affairs officer for Multi-National Corps - Iraq. “The Iraqi Army demonstrated their capability to protect the people of Basra against Special Groups and criminal elements that are ignoring the rule of law.
“The success in finding these large caches was also due in part by numerous tips from concerned local Iraqis. This is another great example of Iraqis dealing with their own issues, and they should be admired for their bravery,” Harper said.

Actually, if (shudder) Obama gets elected, I think it is far more likely that we will be at war with Iran, than if either of the others does. Ahneedajihad will almost certainly seek to take advantage of the callow youth who won the 2008 American Idol contest.
The problem is, once we're at war, CiC Obama will make Jimmy Carter look like a genius.
I’d like to know where the Iranian freedom fighters are. Where are their supporters in the U.S.? If we are to remove the mullahs from power there needs to be a group in place ready to take charge.
I don’t know. I am unaware of any Iranians in this country that are in support, vocal support, of toppling the mullahs.
For some reason we had no problem at all using dirty tricks against the Nazi’s. No reservations at all doing that kind of thing when faced with a standing uniformed army of a nation state. The British excelled at it.
Now we find ourselves at war with bandits, pirates, kidnappers, smugglers, drug runners, assasins, cowardly terrorists dressed as women! People that fake civilian deaths for the news media, use women and children as sheilds in battle. People that behead captives and funnel money through charities, sell us oil that we created the market for and use the money to kill us.
Now, faced with this, we decide to behave like Sunday school teachers! Why?
Because America is only allowed to actually win wars against white people. Anything else is “mean”.
Very interesting...PING!
Try selling that line in Nagasaki. Or Tokyo.
Nuke Iran now!!
The last excuse for doing nothing about this was something like “Just because the material comes from Iran doesn’t mean the Iranian government knew or authorized its shipment to Iraq.”
That line has no relation to the once great pre-sixties America.
“Could someone please explain to me, in all seriousness, why we haven’t taken out Iran’s suspected nuclear sites”
Because Iran’s the UN/EU/Russia’s problem now, with them determining the management strategy and taking responsibility for the results. If we interrupt, they wash their hands of it and Iran’s our baby, just like Iraq.
“and oil refineries?”
It would cost us several times the price of Iraq to fix. And if we didn’t fix it, we’d have another pre-invasion Afghanistan (only MUCH worse) making bio weapons in in the most obscure places.
“Who cares if Iran’s economy is thrown into chaos. That’s actually a good thing, maybe they won’t have the resources to meddle in Iraq and Lebanon if they’re dealing with internal strife.”
They wouldn’t need them, Muslims would turn on us on their own.
Ahhh, OK.
Name a post 60’s war against white people that we have actually “won”.
Good question, all good Americans want to know!
Killing Serbs is A-OK apparently.
That’s debatable as to a “win”. Even debatable as to a war (althought the Serbs on the receiving of the Mk 82’s would probably take exception to that).
When we use troops, tanks, and ground arty on a “white” country, try to take their territory, get them to a conference table to get their signatures on a surrender document, and then take their territory or peacefully occupy a chunk of what used to be theirs, let me know.
In this day and age, I’m not even sure that a “win”, as we came to understand throughout history, is possible. No one really follows the “rules” as such that evolved in Western Europe from the Renaissance through modern times. No declarations of war, no peace treaties, no surrenders, no peaceful occupations - - none of it.
I’m not really arguing with you Toll — I just thought your first comment was rather strange given the context of all post WWII military conflicts.
Well, it seems the world will do nothing, and Iran will have a nuke inside of 2 years. Since it’s earth day I’m going to put the gloom and doom aside and make something on the grill to boost my spirits.
I guess our plan is to threaten them verbally until enough time passes to insure that they have a nuclear device.
Yeah, I’m not really arguing with you either. I think my point was that the anti-war left/media in this country really believes that this is a “racist” war for empire.
It is just part of the dillusional world they inhabit.
One of the reasons that we are not correctly dealing with Iran in a covert manner is because that “media” would blow the whistle on our efforts as swiftly as possible.
They would do this because they share Rev. Wright’s U.S. history carriculum.
What now Hillary?
Iran reportedly put the most high profile components of their nuclear program on ice the same year that we overthrew Saddam. Sanctions are problematic for them now. But even if Ahmadinejad completes development of a few nukes, it won't save their a~s because the Islamic world is witnessing the creaton of a new Arab democracy with free people right in the middle of their heartland, and even President Obama/Hillary can't stop it now.
I’m sure obama will try though. I believe we will need a strong military presence in the region for several more years. God only knows what’s in store if we cut and run.
