100,000 New Cops? More of Hillary’s Unchecked Pandering

The Los Angeles Times reported that on a campaign stop in Philadelphia, Hillary Clinton proposed a $4-billion-a-year, anti-crime package that would “put 100,000 new police officers on the streets.”

She claimed that her husband’s administration “reduced crime to historic lows” in the 1990s, and said “we have to get back to doing what we know works.” If her husband’s 100,000 new police officers scheme reduced crime to historic lows during her husband’s administration, then why not add 200,000, or 500,000 more cops now? Keep reading.

Crime dropped to historic lows in the 1990s because Congress and many states adopted sentencing guidelines in the late 1980s that, when coupled with mandatory minimum sentences and three-strikes laws, kept offenders in prisons for significantly longer periods of time, thus reducing crime overall.

I remember this dead horse well.

First, Klintoon never put anywhere near 100,000 cops on the street, as I recall the number was closer to 10,000 and none of them were funded long term anyway.

In fact, that was the fundamental flaw in the original program, in that it called for 100,000 new cops but didn’t pay for them past the first year they were hired.

Same old, same old unfunded Federal mandates...

100,000 new cops? You could get 1,000,000 new guns cheaper and pass them out to law abiding citizens and have a better result in lowering the violent crime rate. (Where do I apply for my “free” gun?)

Also, the FBI started counting crimes differently under the old Klintoon plan, so real crimes were under-reported - yet another way to reduce crime, right? Just stop counting.

So, in principle, Clinton says more police officers makes the streets safer.

Too bad she can’t extend that logic to the troop levels in Iraq. Seems to me that would be a “vote” for the troop surge.

Or maybe she doesn’t believe it at all and is, as the author suggests, just pandering. Holding to a principle might just be too much of a challenge for her.

It’s not rocket science.

It's not rocket science but it's a science well beyond the understanding of the average liberal/citizen.

In discussions with otherwise intelligent people they still give Clinton credit for the economy of the 90's. The think he was waving some magic wand and not his willie in the Oval office.

If her husband’s 100,000 new police officers scheme reduced crime to historic lows...

It didn't.

And the local governments had to come up with a goodly amount of money too.

100,000 new police officers on the streets.

The same play book Bill used. Those pages are getting pretty tattered.
