Crude Oil and Total Petroleum Imports Top 15 Countries

Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum in February, exporting 2.419 million barrels per day to the United States, which is a decrease from last month (2.586 thousand barrels per day). The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Saudi Arabia with 1.627 million barrels per day.

This is confusing.

Are they importing petroleum, or exporting it? And if they’re exporting (sending it out of their country), why does it say “imports”?

The tables show the sources of US oil imports, the largest source being Canada and the second largest source being Saudi Arabia.

So Saudi Arabia has replaced Mexico as our 2nd largest oil import source. Interesting.

That is mainly because the Mexican government has used their oil industry as a cash cow for their social programs and not invested in much new oil exploration or industry infrastructure maintenance. So when the oilfields begin to be depleted, there are few new fields and there is little capability to do the more difficult types of extraction. Social engineering at its best.
