(CNSNews.com) - Liberal talk show host Bill Maher, whose controversial comments about the pope drew fire from the Catholic community, is planning to apologize Friday night for falsely accusing Pope Benedict XVI of being a Nazi, the Catholic League announced Thursday.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue received a phone call Thursday from an HBO executive regarding comments Maher made last Friday on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher."

As Cybercast News Service previously reported, Donohue said Maher "lied when he said the Pope 'used to be a Nazi.' Like all young men in Germany at the time, he was conscripted into a German Youth organization (from which he fled as soon as he could). Every responsible Jewish leader has acknowledged this reality and has never sought to brand the Pope a Nazi. That job falls to Maher."

Apparently HBO agreed with Donohue's assessment. "Apparently, now Maher does as well. Ergo, the apology," Donohue said.

So will the Catholic League accept Maher's apology?

"Assuming it comes across as genuine, the answer is yes. But I hasten to add that what we would really like to see is for Maher to stop with his hateful diatribes against the Catholic Church. So this is a start, but it hardly puts to rest our concerns," said Donohue.

"After all, there are plenty of factually accurate things Maher could say about other groups that would insult its members, but he chooses not to go there. Perhaps he can add Catholics and the Catholic Church to that protected list as well," he added.

How is it that so few understand that words have meanings? The Pope is not a Nazi, that is without a doubt. Now had he said the Pope is a Roman Catholic and as such many Born Again Christians may not consider him to be a Christian, that would, because words do have exact meanings, a sentence that would be debatable.

Maher is trying to work the same high intellect action that Dennis Miller works. He’s not nearly as accomplished at it as Miller and this set of jokes fell flat, with a thud.

I suspect Maher lacks the requisite intellect to make that work. Every time Maher opens his mouth, he tends to support my position.

The 9/11 hijackers were 'brave', the Pope is a Nazi.

When does a 55 year old man finally take a self-assessment and stop talking like a disobedient 15 year old boy who smokes pot and says revoltingly embarrassing things at the dinner table when his parents have guests over?

Why does CNN and Larry King give him airtime to apologize and clarify his remarks?

You are right...Mahr will probably say something like: "I am sorry if people interpreted my words wrong and were offended...." That is a common response, putting the blame on the people he offended, rather than admit his blatant arrogance and blasphemous slur. It is blasphemy because the Pope/all Popes represent God. Since Jesus appointed Peter to guide us in His word, such language as Mahrs is a direct affront to God. Mahr might think he was "clever," he might not see any fault in his words, and he might pretend to be sorry. But God knows what is in his heart and soul and he cannot hide from God's eyes and ears.
