Maher to Apologize for Calling Pope a 'Nazi' By Melanie Hunter-Omar CNSNews.com Senior Editor April 17, 2008
(CNSNews.com) - Liberal talk show host Bill Maher, whose controversial comments about the pope drew fire from the Catholic community, is planning to apologize Friday night for falsely accusing Pope Benedict XVI of being a Nazi, the Catholic League announced Thursday.
Catholic League President Bill Donohue received a phone call Thursday from an HBO executive regarding comments Maher made last Friday on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher."
As Cybercast News Service previously reported, Donohue said Maher "lied when he said the Pope 'used to be a Nazi.' Like all young men in Germany at the time, he was conscripted into a German Youth organization (from which he fled as soon as he could). Every responsible Jewish leader has acknowledged this reality and has never sought to brand the Pope a Nazi. That job falls to Maher."
Apparently HBO agreed with Donohue's assessment. "Apparently, now Maher does as well. Ergo, the apology," Donohue said.
So will the Catholic League accept Maher's apology?
"Assuming it comes across as genuine, the answer is yes. But I hasten to add that what we would really like to see is for Maher to stop with his hateful diatribes against the Catholic Church. So this is a start, but it hardly puts to rest our concerns," said Donohue.
"After all, there are plenty of factually accurate things Maher could say about other groups that would insult its members, but he chooses not to go there. Perhaps he can add Catholics and the Catholic Church to that protected list as well," he added.
What interests me is why Mahr says such a thing in the first place. Is it because the Pope disagrees with Homosexuality? Is it because the Pope disagrees with Abortion? Is it because the Pope is Christian? I always find it very interesting how liberals define their enemies. The criteria they use appears somewhat insane because those who are most likely to try to kill them they are quick to defend and make excuses for but people who hold opinions that stand in the way of radical sexual activism and violence against the unborn are viewed as on the level with Nazis? People like Mahr continue to dilute the horror of the holocaust with their misuse of the word Nazi.
got it. thanks
See my tagline. THEY’RE not Nazi’s!!!!
Maher is an A-hole, but why does everyone have to apologize for everything these days?
He meant what he said. Oh well. Why demand an insincere apology?
In all the world, across continents and oceans and nationalities, the RCC could find no man up to the task of being pope other than someone who had been a member of the Hitler Youth and whose father was in the S.S.
I wish he’d show how apologetic he is by holding his breath until the Pope is back at the Vatican.
Libertarian radio commentator Michael Graham ( often posted here on FR ) also brags about being a close friend of Maher. Doesn't put him in my favorites column considering I only agree with him about half the time. I can always forgive Ann.
For many years I thought that any idiotic, flaming azzhole, could make stupid, insulting, sarcastic, truth twisting, remarks.
Boy, was I wrong.
No....it's true!
That’s cuz they’re national socialists themselves...
And smells like a dirty diaper.
Nice comment.
Now let’s see, there is a precedent within the long history of the Church of imperfect people rising to lead her.
There was this guy named Saul who passed his time persecuting early Christians, that is after he was knocked off his donkey by a Divine vision. After a name change, he became Peter’s right-hand man, converted the Gentiles, and died a glorious martyr’s death.
And then there was Augustine of Hippo, who lived a life probably not too dissimilar to Maher’s: whoring, drinking, etc. That is, until his conversion, when he became a Prince of the Church and one of her greatest theologians.
We Christians believe in redemption. Apparently, Rabbi Schneier, here in New York, does too.
Now you can go back into your hole.
Whose worse, big nose bill maher (the proud liberal), or his Maoist audience?
Maher’s nazi obsession—
1. The government should have gunned down the Weavers.
2. The Pope is a nazi because while living in a militarized police state he was forced to join Hitler Youth.
3. The “world is Mel Gibson” and all criticism of Israel is the result of latent Nazi sympathies.
Stick to the pot legalization stuff, Bill.
No, you only have to apologize for saying things that aren’t true. :)
Whenever I mention nazi to a liberal, I always say "Nazi Socialist" to connect the lib to them. Always an interesting response. :-)
