Ben Stein vs. Sputtering Atheists
Media Research Center ^ | April 17, 2008 | L. Brent Bozell III

Posted on 04/17/2008 4:07:06 PM PDT by Aristotelian

I confess that when the producers of Ben Stein’s new documentary “Expelled” called, offering me a private screening, I was less than excited.

It is a reality of PC liberalism: There is only one credible side to an issue, and any dissent is not only rejected, it is scorned. Global warming. Gay “rights.” Abortion “rights.” On these and so many other issues there is enlightenment, and then there is the Idiotic Other Side. PC liberalism’s power centers are the news media, the entertainment industry and academia and all are in the clutches of an unmistakable hypocrisy: Theirs is an ideology that preaches the freedom of thought and expression at every opportunity, yet practices absolute intolerance toward dissension.

Evolution is another one of those one-sided debates. We know the concept of Intelligent Design is stifled in academic circles. An entire documentary to state the obvious? You can see my reluctance to view it.

I went into the screening bored. I came out of it stunned.

Ben Stein’s extraordinary presentation documents how the worlds of science and academia not only crush debate on the origins of life, but also crush the careers of professors who dare to question the Darwinian hypothesis of evolution and natural selection.

Stein asks a simple question: What if the universe began with an intelligent designer, a designer named God? He assembles a stable of academics – experts all -- who dared to question Darwinist assumptions and found themselves “expelled” from intellectual discourse as a result. They include evolutionary biologist Richard Sternberg (sandbagged at the Smithsonian), biology professor Caroline Crocker (drummed out of George Mason University), and astrophysicist Guillermo Gonzalez (blackballed at Iowa State University).

That’s disturbing enough, but what Stein does next is truly shocking. He allows the principal advocates of Darwinism to speak their minds.

Evolution doesn’t cover the origin of life. That is another field of science.

I didn't have to actually see Al Gore's movie before I pronounced it a crock.

I feel pretty confident that Ben Stein's film is cut from the same cloth.

Boob bait for the Bubbas...

It will be ignored. I doubt he will get even a nomination. They’ll give it to some Brazillion movie about a street kid who murdered his mother, got out of prison, and now sells flowers at the airport.

That Scientific American response is about as lame as their response The Skeptical Envronmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg. Seriously, if that's the best they can do, it's pretty bad.

He allows the principal advocates of Darwinism to speak their minds.

Brilliant! Knowing what a cesspool of claptrap is in those minds, he brings his point home so much better by allowing them to expose themselves...

.... a spotlight on the ignorance of so many who say so much, yet know so very little.

I go to the theater about once a year - I guess this will be my 2008 movie...

Good that you buy into a review by a liberal rag like Scientific America! Where were these idiots when Fartandhype 911 came out to debunk Moore-on?

Well, if a lightening storm created electric sparks, something/someone had to have created the lightning

Also, why isn't lightening still creating life? Has it lost it's 'spark'?

LOL, Scientific American also rabidly endorses global warming, so we see how credible they are of late.

Try again.

Evolution doesn’t cover the origin of life. That is another field of science.

Technically true. Evolution itself, as a pseudoscience, doesn't cover the origin of life. Evolutionism, as a philosophy, does.

This post is not a direct comment about Mr. Stein or his movie Expelled, which I have not seen.

The problem that I have with the issues being brought up by Mr. Stein and his movie is the following. The people who are wrongly being oppressed, Christians in particular if I understand what the movie is about, are ignorant of the Constitution and its history anyway. The consequence of this ignorance is that Christians are impotent to stand up for their constitutional rights against factions who are themselves constitutionally ignorant.

Given Mr. Stein's movie, this post (<-click) appropriately references an earlier thread relating to the problems that teacher John Freshwater is having with respect to keeping his bible in the classroom.

Also, this post (<-click) referenced in the post concerning Mr. Freshwater, while it addresses a 10 commandments issue, explains how FDR's distain for state rights got us into the c&s separation messes that we are having today, in my opinion, as evidenced by this very thread.

As I mentioned in another post, the bottom line is that the people need to reconnect with the intentions of the Founders concerning the Founder's division of federal and state powers. This is particularly important where the wrongly ignored 10th A. power of the states to address religious issues is concerned, power now limited by the honest interpretation of the 14th Amendment. The people then need to get in the faces of renegade justices, the Oval Office and the Senate and do a major spring cleaning where government respect for our religious freedoms is concerned.
