Obama's memoir dripped with contempt for modern gotcha politics, for a campaign culture obsessed with substantively irrelevant but supposedly symbolic gaffes like John Kerry ordering Swiss cheese or Al Gore sighing or George H.W. Bush checking his watch or Michael Dukakis looking dorky in a tank.
"What's troubling is the gap between the magnitude of our challenges and the smallness of our politicsthe ease with which we are distracted by the petty and trivial," he wrote.
Last night at the National Constitution Center, at a Democratic debate that was hyped by ABC as a discussion of serious constitutional issues, America got to see exactly what Obama was complaining about.
At a time of foreign wars, economic collapse and environmental peril, the cringe-worthy first half of the debate focused on such crucial matters as Senator Obama's comments about rural bitterness, his former pastor, an obscure sixties radical with whom he was allegedly "friendly," and the burning constitutional question of why he doesn't wear an American flag pin on his lapel with a single detour into Senator Hillary Clinton's yarn about sniper fire in Tuzla.
Apparently, Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos ran out of time before they could ask Obama why he's such a lousy bowler.
It must be said that Obama did not seem very comfortable on the defensive, and he had trouble answering questions like whether he's more patriotic than the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Hillary Clinton constantly salted Obama's wounds, all the while insisting that she was merely concerned that Republicans would salt them in the fall, and that his various controversies simply "raised questions" about his electability; at one point she claimed that his exhaustively chewed-over relationship with Wright "deserves further exploration," which is kind of like saying that Whitewater deserves further investigation.

Obama could have scored that point - the pettiness of this debate is EXACTLY against what I am running and trying to change.
He tried. But he was rattled and looked weak. Its not too late though. He ought to go on get-some-sympathy tour, and give a speech on Hillary's pettiness.
If the Witch takes office, all those revived her, ought to burn in hell.
I see Time is breaking out their Obama kneepads. Attempting to deflect the attention from Obama’s terrible performance.
I could be wrong, probably am, but I can’t imagine all these die-hard Obama fans obediently jumping on Hillary’s bandwagon should she win the nomination. There has been so much bitterness (there’s that word again!) and even hatred stirred up against her. Blacks who are supportive Obama will almost certainly not vote for Hillary. Without them, she doesn’t have a chance. In the meantime, John McCain is looking more sensible, more capable, and above all the petty stuff being dragged out by both Hillary’s and Obama’s campaigns. Who knows what will happen in November, but for now, McCain looks like he’s the one to beat.
Yea Right! I bet you were just aghast at the endless non story about GW's National Guard duty.
Obots:
Your messiah is applying for the most important job in the world, President of the United States. There is nothing that is out-of-bounds. There is no question that is too trivial or personal. This is the big leagues, and Obama and his sheep know this. If you can’t take the heat, take your purse and go home.....
Sorry, Barry,
but your CORE BELIEFS AND WORLDVIEW
are ANYTHING but “petty” considerations when electing a president.
Grunwald is (intentionally, I think) missing the point of this o-called pettiness. Politicians (especially Dems)spend millions trying to convince us they are the greatest person that has walked the earth since Christ. These “petty” incidents are extremely valuable to the average voter, then, at getting a real picture of the candidates. The press, of course, is insulted by this, since they are already doing such a great job of showing us the “real” side to these candidates.
From one Typical White Person to another, you are right on the money. And the more some of the MSM try to save Obama, the more negative exposure Hitlery will get. Obama should, or could, come out with ads against Hitlery’s past in remaining Primary states, too. Gotta love it. Denver will be fun.
I realize that doesn't mean much to the MSM but the author sounds like a "typical" "bitter" Osama supporter. Where's the cry baby seal?
And he lied with his answer.
The lib media is circling the wagons trying to spin Obama’s horrible performance last night. The message seems to be, “Don’t believe your lying eyes with regard to what you saw - the real badguy is...uhhh.....ABC. Yeah ABC with those dastardly tough questons and lack of worship. That’s the ticket.”
I loved Rush’s last caller’s idea. Let the dims have mccain and we’ll find us another one.
Whatever will cause the dissolution of the dhimmirat party, that’s what needs to happen.
Also, the more you lie & twist your background, the more these “petty” incidents will tend to jump up and bite you on the ass. The classic example being John Kerry, who advertised himself as the true-blue war hero, then got swiftboated. Had he just stayed closer to the truth and expressed some remorse for his war-protestor excesses, I doubt the swiftboat thing would have had near the traction.
I don’t think the issue of character is ‘petty’!!
Despite of all the ‘words’ we get, it is the mirror into one’s soul.
Show me someone who’s displayed moral or physical courage and I’ll show you a leader!
Also the guy spins all over the place, is it wrong to try and pin him down? ‘Time’ thinks so unless you are a Republican.
They didn’t follow up on the Pardon’s question. They gave Hillary a choice to respond now or respond later. She smartly passed on it.
If they weren’t trying to trip Obama, they should have come back and followed up on Klinton’s Weather Underground Pardon-Gate.
Rush loved it, too. He was still chuckling about it after the break.
Obama is not as smart as he thinks. Last night sure did show it.
