The story as reported on KMJ 590 - Fresno, is that a male student, age 17, used a baseball bat to club a school resource officer in the head (This was a sworn Fresno PD officer, not a "guard" as reported in the headline). The officer dropped and reached for his service weapon. The magazine fell out and the student advanced on the officer. The officer then reached for his backup weapon and shot the student once, killing the student.

If this report is accurate, it sounds as if it was justified.

The student will be portrayed as a victim. Legal status?

The initial attack caused the officer to drop his service revolver and the magazine fell out.

Hmmm, I think its safe to say that the details are a little hazy at this early stage.

“The initial attack caused the officer to drop his service revolver and the magazine fell out. “

Typical of the level of accuracy in reporting.

After taking a bat to the head, you’d be lucky to even identify your gun let alone grab it an shoot.

Not sure I understand how a magazine can fall out of a revolver ....I only thought that pistols had mags .... and most LEO’s carry a backup gun on their ankles ....

It’s actually quite common and practical.

I do think it sounds like a justified shooting but think an investigation is needed to ask why the magazine fell out of his service weapon. Is more training needed? Is the weapon faulty? Also, what is the departments policy on backup weapons? Are they allowed? Recommended?

Glad the LEO was armed. Imagine the situation if he wasn’t. The kid clubs the LEO, then goes around clubbing anyone else who got in his way. Of course, I’m sure some here will say the LEO acted in a rash fashion.
