John McCain is a hero for his service in Vietnam. Most conservatives would be thrilled to support him, if only he would give them reason to.
Why is it that conservatives have such a hard time lining up behind John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president? Is it, as some liberals suggest, just "pique" -- that we didn't get our way, and now we're throwing a tantrum? Or are the differences between McCain and conservatives very real, very serious matters that go to the heart of the principles of conservatism?
The truth is that the differences with McCain are real. They involve matters of policy, of personnel ("Who will make decisions in a McCain administration?"), and of insights into the Senator's thinking about conservatives and the issues important to conservatives.
The biggest complaints expressed by conservatives are these:
SUPREME COURT: Perhaps conservatives' biggest issue is whether future appointments to the Supreme Court and lower courts will be in the mold of Justices David Souter, John Paul Stevens, and William Brennan -- left-wingers appointed by Republican presidents -- or in the mold of distinguished conservatives such as Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Antonin Scalia.
It may be that even a moderate conservative such as Samuel Alito would be "too" conservative for John McCain. According to John Fund of The Wall Street Journal, McCain, in private conversations with lawyers, "indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito because 'he [Alito] wore his conservatism on his sleeve.'"
And, although McCain has promised to appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, that's highly unlikely, because conservative judges would overturn the Senator's proudest achievement, McCain-Feingold.

I guarantee that he will do an about face on that once he is in office...
That’s the point of other posts I’ve made....How did McCain become OUR candidate? HOW???
He was the least conservative of the republicans and he blew away all the others...makes no sense to me unless there isn’t as many conservatives as I thought there are...
Your point? I get the same results in the most important (to me) areas with any of the three. That is why none of them receives my vote. With McCain I get the added "bonus" of the Republican Party moving further Left and no opposition to his Liberal agenda.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Cicero: The answer to that is that Thompson was shafted by 1) the MSM, which buried every bit of news about him except to say every day that he was lazy; 2) he was shafted by key conservative gurus, who foolishly thought that Mitt was more electable (Hugh Hewitt, NRO, Ann Coulter); 3) he was shafted by the Republican insiders, who arranged to frontload the primaries with liberal states and crossover states, allowing the Dems to push McCain in order to screw their opponents; 4) he was shafted by Huckabee, who threw mud at him and peeled off the Evangelical vote at a key point in time.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have thought this all along, but people I’ve mentioned it to said I was a “conspiracy theorist”...*L*
But, I hope you don't think a MacNumbNut's appointee would. $20 says if he becomes POTUS, Teddy Kennedy vets all his judicial nominees prior to submitting them to The Senate.
I think the MSM and the liberal democratic party were scared to death of Fred Thompson....
Do you remember the polls on FR asking who you would vote for. Remember the two real conservatives, Tancredo and Hunters numbers? That’s when I knew we were in serious trouble.
>It’s my firm belief that we will see more liberal ideas codified under McCain than we would under either Clinton OR Obama.
You are 100% correct.
I simply do not understand how everbody does not see this just as we do. It is quite plain.
Thank you for your post - bill
McCain does have a record as a fiscal conservative. But, hey, Bill Clinton also has a record of balancing budgets.
Vote McCain: Souter is better than Ginsburg!
I don’t know why people think he is so pro-life - he supports subsidies for embryonic stem-cell research.
Not to mention McCain-Feingold. Not only is McCain-Feingold an assault on the first amendment, its also one of the most destructive anti-life measures ever enacted by Congress. Under “Campaign Finance Reform”, a pro-life group cant run ads criticizing the record of a pro-abortion candidate within 60 days of a general election or 30 days of a primary. Interestingly though, theres no similar gag-rule for McCains buddies in the mainstream media.
McCain is a liberal in sheep’s clothing.
That sums it up very well.
McCain is a reflection of Arizona politics.
You guys hood winked half the country a few years back. Few are falling for the knee deep BS this time. Better try another shtick.
“He was the least conservative of the republicans and he blew away all the others.”
That’s just it, Boonie, he didn’t. The others were told ‘quit’! The others were told they couldn’t win. The media gave all the coverage to McCain no matter how far behind everyone else he was in polls early in the race. The others cancelled each other out support(Ron Paul, Thompson, etc) and there was McCain, left to rise to the top like soured milk. McCain won NH and was declared the nominee! Then he gives Huckabee his delegates in W. Va, pushing Romney out. A lot more repubs voted against McCain than voted for him. Many of us haven’t even voted, yet there he is...the nominee. It stinks.
Front loaded, winner take all primaries in crossover voting blue states.
considering reality instead of what people say that they might do, I would have to go on his actual record of voting against those two Bush tax cuts.
Of course, reality is not always in play with most people.
