New 2010 Ford 4.4-liter diesel engine scooped!

At last week's dealer show in Las Vegas, a picture of Ford's upcoming 4.4-liter V8 diesel powerplant was leaked to the Internet... ouch. The new powerplant is hardly a secret (we were reporting the first hints of it in June 2006, and the legal issues surrounding the engine in June 2007), but this is the first time the public has seen a photo of the new diesel in its metallic flesh.

Designed to offer comparable acceleration to the current 5.4-liter gasoline Triton, the new engine should be rated at about 330 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is expected to be around 20% better than the gas-fed Triton. To meet tough emission standards, a NOx after-treatment called "aqueous urea" will be injected into the hot exhaust stream. While the additive cleans up the tailpipe exhaust, it will also be another fluid the consumer will have to maintain (Ford is promising the "urea tank" will only need replenishing during oil changes). Although it doesn't look very attractive sitting naked on a stand atop the garish hotel carpet, you had better get used to seeing this V8 around town. Ford is saying that after a debut in the F-150 midway through the 2010 model year, we can expect the engine to follow in the Expedition, Navigator, E-Series vans, and F-Series SuperDuty.

NOx after-treatment called "aqueous urea"

Great. How much will that cost? Will it offset any potential fuel cost savings?

We’ll see.

I’m not so sure that the diesel will replace the otto just yet.

I don’t think it will go over very well with ranchers. That sucker looks like it will set green grass on fire. Will it be ok’d for driving on asphalt?

Following the typical Ford engineering, is there also a 2.2 liter four-cylinder Diesel in the works?

For years, Ford has had a policy of taking one bank of the V-8 engine they were then producing, and modifying it into a four-cylinder. This was done for the interchangeability of parts, like connecting rods, pistons, cylinder head, main bearings, and in the very old flathead fours and V-8s, the distributor, which sat down on the front of the engine and was driven off the end of the camshaft.

A Diesel paired with the hybrid technology now used in the Ford Escape Hybrid would be a quantum jump in fuel economy, like 40+ mpg in combined city-country driving.

It's not for lack of trying.

I love the injection vs. regneration methods. One, you have to keep another tank full and the other, you loose out on fuel economy.

What are we talking about trade offs for NOx reduction and the accompanying reductions in fuel efficency? Isn’t someone finally going to see that we’re not saving anything?

4.4-liter V8 diesel powerplant “Sigh”

When are they going to get it through their head that we need an inline 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel in the 3 to 4 liter range.

I read this morning the Volvo’s new Semi diesel scrubers are as big as wine barrel, but they only add about 7% to the total cost of the semi-truck. They reduce emissions by 50%.
Other devices reduce emissions to 80%, but there is no room to attach them.

For the life of me I can’t understand why no one has figured this out yet.

In Australia, 4cyl TDi's in Land Rovers, Nissans and Toyota 4wd are S.O.P. They all have those engines in production and available for export.

The California Air Resources Board and EPA have a great influence on what get's imported and what doesn't. Another interesting factoid, U.S. refineries put out 25%/75% gasoline; European refineries do 50/50. Thus increasing the price of diesel in the U.S. It might help to build a couple new refineries about now.

Anything to replace their PowerJoke engine would be an improvement.

I am afraid I would have to go with the Cummins in the Dodge trucks. I don’t know what it is but V-blocks and diesels don’t seem to mix very well. especially in farm equipment.
