China’s Loyal Youth
New York Times ^ | 4/13/2008 | MATTHEW FORNEY

Posted on 04/13/2008 4:59:42 AM PDT by RDasher

MANY sympathetic Westerners view Chinese society along the lines of what they saw in the waning days of the Soviet Union: a repressive government backed by old hard-liners losing its grip to a new generation of well-educated, liberal-leaning sophisticates. As pleasant as this outlook may be, it’s naïve. Educated young Chinese, far from being embarrassed or upset by their government’s human-rights record, rank among the most patriotic, establishment-supporting people you’ll meet. More...

Apparently Chinese youth are taught to support there government, where in the US the opposite is true. Here they are taught to be liberals, and not trust government, except when they want more government aid, and programs. An oxymoron for sure.

Don't worry, a little re-education and a cultural revolution and we'll be a-ok just like the Chinese.

I can't agree.

Today's lefties are taught that government is their keeper. That nearly all critical aspects of life must be provided by government, from personal protection to education and job training. That the state knows best.

Not really all the different from the Chinese.

This is Durant, Part 2. Those Russians just couldn’t get enough of the gulags. I’ve been to China and the younger generation hates the government and the powers that be much more than any liberal in the US. I can just see a reporter for the times going up to a group of Chinese, saying, I’m here from the NY Times, how do you really feel about your oppressive bloodthirsty government? Do you support them? All the while having a Chinese “tour guide” at their side. The Times just needs to be completely dismantled.

I completely agree. I’m sitting here in my Shanghai apartment, and by and large most young adults in this country want MORE freedom. They want to run their own businesses (and increasingly do so), they want to have their own self-determination.

Now, they are also VERY proud of being Chinese! And never tell a Shanghaiese that you prefer Beijing, or you think that Xiamen is a prettier city than Shanghai - you’ll get an earful!

But do not mistake pride in culture/race with blind obedience to the State; I’m proud of being German and Irish; likewise young Chinese are proud of being Chinese.

But by and large the youth - and most of the middle aged - want change in China. That is what is actually driving the change that IS happening here. And it is happening!

The big test for that government will be when the economy turns bad.

I concur, but I think Chinese pride is a step beyond that of most other nations. Most of my close Chinese friends simply burst with pride any time a Chinese accomplishment is noted in the media. One of my biggest fears is that some dynamic personality will arise in China to really accelerate those nationalistic feelings, and put them to use. I truly hope that the Westernization and social freedoms take root first, for the sake of a few hundred million young men.

MATTHEW FORNEY is a idiot who reversed cause and effect.

Educated young Chinese, far from being embarrassed or upset by their government’s human-rights record, rank among the most patriotic, establishment-supporting people you’ll meet.

Chinese parents who train their children to be anything but embarassed or upset by their government's human-rights record are the only families permitted by the grace of the Communist Cadre to educate their young children past trade school level of education.  A single statement of doubt in the Communist philosophy uttered by a grade school aged Chinese student can and does permanently ban that student from a path of higher education (unless the child's parent's is a Cadre officer who can intimidate the local school headmaster).

I have met Chinese exchange students in Singapore. You won’t believe how brainwashed they are.

Watch out for the coming decades... we are all witnessing the rise of a super-efficient, super-sized, NAZI-esque system right before us, rather helplessly.

Agreed.

Right under the noses of Powell, Rice and Hadley.

They never were serious anti-communists...being "moderates". So they have no keenly-developed sensory ability to recognize the lies they are being fed daily by the Chicoms and their trade accomplices, nurturing false hopes, a Faux-Reformed China.

China has been more clever at thier genocide. In areas they have conquered, they have moved many Chinese citizens in, so that the native residents couldn’t claim sovereign status.

No need to gun people down if you flood the region, intermarry and simply change it into a Chinese civiian regions.

McCain is rock solid on SCOTUS judicial appointments. He voted for Ginsberg, Kennedy and Souter.

And he also started the Gang of 14 behind the GOP leaderships' back...

That was my first objection to him based on the judicial appointment process. Then I found out he voted to confirm the worst of the nine justices.

Folks may be able to make a valid case on Kennedy and Souter, regarding what we knew up front. With Ginsberg, there’s no explaining that confirmation vote away.

Either John doesn’t get conservatism, or he didn’t bother to take his duty seriously as a U.S. Senator, which cost the nation.

But are they willing to sacrifice everything for freedom? I don’t know the answer to this question, but would like to hear back from you. I know the Tibetans will, but the rest of China hates them. What is your view on how the olympic debacle is shaping up. Will this be the millstone around the chicom party’s neck?
