McCain camp hammers Obama on small town comments
The McCain campaign, finding a gift in its lap, tees off on the eye-opening comments by Barack Obama from a fundraiser last week in San Francisco (of all places).
Asked to respond, McCain adviser Steve Schmidt called it a "remarkable statement and extremely revealing."
"It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking," Schmidt said. "It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans."
Said Obama, as recorded by a HuffPost writer in attendance:
"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said. "And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
The Republicans are itching to play the elitism card against Obama, and these comments just made that task a whole lot easier.
UPDATE: Obama's camp, not confirming or even mentioning their candidate's comments, issues a statement from spokesman Tommy Vietor:

Unfortunately for McCain, Obama is self-destructing too early. McCain might have to face Hillary after all.
Obama, the Bigot, speaks again
I think the McCain camp is not playing this for what it is really worth. Condescension and elitism — sure, that’s there. But the more significant subtexts and undercurrents are more scary, and are just lying there waiting to be pointed out to the American people, over and over again.
“Jobs have been gone for 25 years and nothing has come along to replace them” — Most likely a falsehood. But even if true, what type of jobs are we talking about? Things change; technology has supplanted many jobs in 25 years.
“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns” — Translation: I’m anti-gun. Pro gun-control.
“or religion” — Translation: Clinging to anything but MY religion is a bad thing.
“or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment” — Translation: Open borders, and perks and incentives galore for the illegals!
“or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” — Translation: If you have a gun or are religious or oppose illegal immigration or are against lopsided trade policies with human rights violators like China, then the real problem is that you are just frustrated that you are a typical average white person schmoe who lives in a small town and is bitter that there aren’t enough jobs to go around.
This guy is a riot.
We need Barry and his Ice Queen to save us crazy white folks from our racist selves. I guess us little people don’t have a right to be angry about the hoards of illegal immigrants who cost us billions and take our jobs. Barry expects us to welcome the criminals with open arms as long as they belong to a certain race. Put the gun down and hand over your wallet or pocketbook crackers.
Small town folks could move to the cities or wherever the so-called opportunities happen to be, but some of us don’t like the multicultural, transgender, transsexual, and in endless other ways, peculiar lifestyles of the friends of Hillary/Billary, or, more recently, BO.
When you dorky politicos come wandering down main street trying to figure out what you should eat and what you should wear to bond with the folks, you should spare yourselves the effort. The return on investment for campaigning amongst us by the likes of you is negligible. Your campaign activities just scare the domestic animals and aggravate the human beings.
The coupe de grace is to link him as a great beneficiary of Affirmative Action and his overarching sense of entitlement.
Looking down on poor whites is death for him. Uppity is the first word that comes to mind.
This gets better and better.
I smell a McGovern DOA candidate developing that the dims can’t/won’t stop.
A lot of hits on Google.
ObamaLama DingDong cannot save himself, therefore how can he save America.
As if urban blacks - who are B. Hussein Obama’s constituency - hang with people unlike themselves.
“”Funny that he threw in Free Trade, that seems odd with his BS in Ohio about NAFTA.””
Exactly.
Hillary should use it.
Also the condescending attitude about religion.
Shows his church affiliation was mainly political.
Obama isn’t even OF the black American struggle. He grew up around the world to a father NOT descended from slaves and a white mother who’s parents raised him.
He is spiteful of his own white heritage. He needs a psychoanalyst to work out his family issues, not the presidency.
No, just the ones who are anti-immigrant.
We’ll he’s claimed that he wasn’t observant at church anyway, after all he never heard Jeremiah Wright’s hateful venom.
Obama’s list is bigger than that:
“they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
I think just the ones that are bitter about people who are not like them.
Now, is Obama bitter about the people who are bitter about people who are not like them?
I agree. I wish Osama had said this after he put the stake through the beast’s hear in August.
It is pretty delicious, though. What a dunce.
