“according to people familiar with the conversations”

Guarantee that come from Moonves, AKA “Leslie the Leaker.”

And yet, they are determined to waste this opportunity by keeping Perky Katie in place until January. Why?

Money. They have to pay her for the time left on her contract whether she is on the air or not. If they put a new anchor in they have to pay him/her as well.

Besides, who wants to admit they made a mistake?

Hey, if they wait maybe a house will fall on her or something, and they'll get rid of her without having to pay her.

CBS should just hire Rush Limbaugh and give him full editorial control.

THEN ratings would skyrocket.

(of course you would have to drive a constitutional stake through UBERliberal walter crokite, but a little garlic and holy water should clean up the curses)

Is there any chatter that Moonves’ ass in on the line here?

I speculate about this because of Sumner Redstone’s history and reputation. It would be in character for Redstone to do this and blame Moonves for damaging the CBS brand.

Oh, please, not Connie. Somehow I don't think even CBS would be stupid enough to bring her back!

But, doesn't Katie have some sort of "no fire" clause or something that insured her three years on the show? If she is canned, she just might laugh all the way to the bank with $45 million or so. Katie is just another bleeding heart liberal/Dem with deep pockets and a lavish lifestyle who tells the rest of the world how we taxpayers should fund the care of and support entitlement programs for the little people who are financially deprived because rich Republicans keep them unemployed and impoverished.

Sorry, but the dealings of The Suits, like The Suits themselves, were always avoided by me.

Some rules I followed.

You can never win with The Suits, You can only lessen the degree by which you lose. Ergo; avoid suits.

Help The Suits just a little, but never too much. If you get too close to a Suit's kid, the Suit will worry how many “Our family is really crazy” stories the kid tells you.

Re the above, recommend a GP, dermatologist, surgeon, etc, if asked by the suit. Most importantly, call your contact and get them an early appointment with the doctor. Never recommend a shrink or lawyer, for reasons stated above.

Always let it be known that, as a reporter, you are tight with the cops. Then, when their precious debutante daughter is caught doing lines of coke in a girls’ room of some Harlen nightclub, The Suits will turn to you for help.

Rules on doing The Suits wife. If she loves him and they are having a minor tiff, don't sleep with her just because you are air talent and she thinks she can hurt him by doing you. She will blab during the reconciliation. If on the other hand, she really hates him, go for it.

If The Suit goes to AA meetings, make sure you “bump into him” at a meeting at least once a year.

If all else fails, and you need to really get to him, find out what materiel possession he loves the most, car, boat, etc. 4 flat tires can ruin his day. Also, call all his favorite “power” restaurants and make reservations for him. Do this at all the power places at least three times a week for a month.

Of course, he never shows up.

Then, when he really needs a table, they won't give him one because they think he is a no-show stiff.

TV was so much fun.......

ROFLMAO! Wonderful list.

I’m going out on a limb here and say Moonves’ is in trouble.

1.) Sumner gave him the keys to the car when they split CBS off from Viacom.
2.) First thing Les does is pay three prices for Katie. It was all his show from the start.
3.) Not only was it a ratings disaster, but more important to Sumner it was a PR disaster.
4.) Sumner is vindictive and loves payback. Witness his public humiliation of Tom Cruise.
5.) Just because someone made Sumner a billion dollars, that means nothing. With him, it’s all about what have you done for me this week. Tom Freston built MTV and made tons of money. He’s gone.
6.) CBS’ stock price is much lower than it was when the company was split off from Viacom.
7.) CBS’ prospects for good ratings - and coincident advertising windfalls - in the entertainment division is dismal.

Conclusion:
Mooves is out by fall. You heard it here first.

Why would they want to keep her anyway with the terrible ratings - she should have been let go ages ago. I would think that with the upcoming election they’d get someone in there to increase viewership and elevate the ratings - it would be ridiculous to keep her during this time.

Although the “CBS Evening News” still lags far behind its competitors on NBC and ABC,

What these low grade morons at C-BS don't seem to understand is that people tune into the news to get - wait for it - NEWS!

They don't tune into the news to get perky answers. Nor for manufactured stories. Nor for politically correct crusades.

They tune in for news and if they can't find news at that source, they'll cultivate other sources to get their news from.

I can't believe that people who earn what McManus and Moonves earn and their experience in their business could POSSIBLY think that the way to get over the Rather lies was to hire a perky anchor.

Whadda buncha maroons!

Since when is “News Anchoring” an important position. All they do is read teleprompters.

It also tells us that CBS is not planning on disbanding the news division after the election.

I think the theory is that people would prefer a known quantity during big stories, rather than breaking in the new guy.

Wow, you sound like Tom Grunnick/William Hurt. Lil’ tear creepin’ down your cheek? Bet you banged Holly Hunter, huh?

You and Laz would probably get along great.

You reminded me in your post of why I’m happy I didn’t go into the broadcast business when I had the chance (years and years and years ago).

Just saw your screen name and had to give a shout.

Im a UNL grad (’87) and live in Omaha (Gretna actually but close enough). Obviously a huge fan of the ‘Skers (see my screen name).

I saw my first Husker game in ‘77. Can’t describe to the rest of the Freepers what a thrill that was to a 7th grader from Beatrice. Stood by the tunnel and shook hands with Randy Garcia when the team was coming on the field.

I took a look at the roster from ‘77 and boy did that bring back some memories. Rick Berns, the late great Andra Franklin, Derrie Nelson, Randy Schluessner, Jim Pillen and IM Hipp.

Sorry to go down nostalgia street there. Looks like the Big Red is going back in a positive direction with T.O. back where he belongs. I heard on the radio this morning that tickets to the spring game are sold out and selling for $150 a pair on Ebay. Bo-mania is in full force.

Anyway, good to see one of my childhood heroes on the FR. Go Big Red!

Clayton

Laz is a warm wonderful human being.

My favorite quote from Hunter Thompson:

“The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.”

So true, but it made me a pretty good living for 40+ years. Interviewed a couple of Presidents, a PM or two, covered a few wars and got to spend 42 straight days in Zpurang, Tibet... where they DON'T take American Express and bathing is considered something you do every time you are especially happy.... at least once or twice a year!
