COURIC'S FALL HURT US ALL (overpaid fluff ball with no testosterone gravitas)
NY POST ^ | April 11, 2008 | ANDREA PEYSER

Posted on 04/11/2008 2:43:55 AM PDT by Liz

One wonders why, in its giddiness to lure in Katie Couric as its news babe, CBS threw away all common sense. Since the dawn of television, men have dominated network news for obvious reasons. Their voices are lower and they rarely display middle-aged gams. This amalgam of testosterone and primness has helped even an outright buffoon like Dan Rather to do a convincing imitation of gravitas. Even the network's trick of sending Katie to Iraq failed to rope in a single viewer. But much has been lost beyond the handsome salary. Now, putting another female into Katie's position will look like a stunt. And a stunt that failed miserably the first time around. Talent, not affirmative action, will save CBS News.

...I agree. It would be fun to dig up all the Katie threads and send them over to CBS. I, for one, saw this coming before she started at CBS.

To All TV News Execs: If you want viewers by the millions, give us the truth in each story, and drop the liberal agenda.

She was the wrong the personality type for that job. We made that call on FR when they hired her.

Maybe they could bring Dan Rather back. Is he still looking for a news job?

Those early AM shows are probably a far more lucrative market for the networks than their evening news.

When I was a kid, watching the evening news was a standard part of my parent's day (and a good time to do my homework). Now, by the time 7pm rolls around, I already know the day's big events, what the market did, if any bad storms are coming, etc. I have absolutely no reason to waste an hour of my precious time watching evening news. I wonder which network will be the first to ditch the format - maybe gradually, like replacing it with a daily news magazine, like E! (and about as deep).

“Though some people close to Ms. Couric, as well as some professional associates, said Thursday they believed... she would not remain as anchor through the election, and might leave in the next few weeks...”

Nite/Nite Katie!

I’m pleased to say that I have never watched her, even once.

Me too. I would rather shave with a cheese-grater.

"COURIC'S FALL HURT US ALL

Can't say that I'm innocent. The wife and I watched Katie and Bryant Gumbal (and, prior to Katie, Jane Pauley and Deborah Norville) in the mid- to late-1980s on a regular basis. We were Republicans but at the time even NBC was not overtly leftist -- even Bryant Gumbel wasn't opening his mouth.

But we turned off perky Katie when, during the 1988 election, she turned from a cute sweetheart into "attack Katie" when she interview Vice President Bush. We were amazed how vicious she was, how hostile her follow-up questions were, how primed she was to try and trip up a decent man.

We vowed never to watch "Today" or Katie again. And, 20 years later, we still haven't.

Katie’s fall has little to do with her sex, but much more to do with her being an airhead trying to look smart. Even my liberal wife wouldn’t watch Katie and saw Katie as an intellectual lightweight only capable of doing fluff pieces on programs like GMA or The View.

It was pretty clear it wouldn't work out when she was giggling and snickering at Robin Williams imitating a colonoscopy camera on her morning show. They should give her a show on E! or Comedy Central. But why did it take CBS this long to figure out what most Americans knew right away?

"Dan Rather, who last month accused broadcast networks of dumbing down and tarting up their newscasts, said he can foresee a time when media company executives retreat from evening news production.

“The tendency is to dumb it down and sleaze it up,” Mr. Rather said, echoing statements he made last month. Those earlier comments, made in response to a question about current “Evening News” anchor Katie Couric, started a back-and-forth with CBS CEO Les Moonves, who took issue with Mr. Rather’s remarks. "

Rather Says Odds Getting Longer for Couric: FR July 23, 2007

"As already noted on NewsBusters, former CBS anchor Dan Rather appeared on Monday’s edition of "Morning Joe" and lobbied for a "a strategic withdrawal from Iraq." He also found time to twice bash his "Evening News" successor Katie Couric for dumbing down and "tarting up" the news."

Rather Attacks Couric: 'Dumb It Down, Tart It Up' 06/11/2007

"NEW YORK (AP) - Katie Couric admits she sometimes wishes she hadn't made the move from NBC's "Today" to the "CBS Evening News." "Of course," she said in an interview with New York magazine. "I'm human. I'm not going around `dee-da dee-da dee.' I have days when I'm like, `Oh my God, what did I do?' "

Katie Couric Unsure Of Her Move to CBS: Jul 9, 2007

"KATIE COURIC last night underwent her second on-air colonoscopy. Watching the procedure was not a horribly painful event. Nor was it an experience I would volunteer to repeat any time soon. For her very first night as CBS News diva, Katie spent a half-hour looking as if she desperately had to go potty. "

cBS has several options for gravitas:

Bill Sammon, Brit Hume, Victor Davis Hanson, Charles Krauthammer or Mark Steyn.

If they feel they must have a woman, it's gotta be Michelle Malkin or Liz Hasselbeck.

Me neither. And I’m a Neilson family worth 30,000 viewers.

Megyn Kelly’s ratings should be good though.
