The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the nations largest and most influential pro-life organization, has announced the unanimous decision by its board of directors to back Republican presidential hopeful John McCain.
The decision by NRLCs board of directors to support the Arizona senator in his bid for the presidency was first made known in a report by LifeNews.com, an independent news agency that reaches more than 250,000 pro-life advocates each week.
NRLCs position was later confirmed in an email to The Christian Post, which also received a copy of the passed resolution.
Be it resolved that National Right to Life supports Senator John McCain for election as President of the United States and strongly opposes both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and urges all pro-life citizens to do likewise, the statement reads.
Though NRLC has butt heads with McCain in the past mostly over his stances on embryonic stem cell research and campaign finance reform the organization noted that his pro-life record was overall consistent, favorable, and markedly different when compared to Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton.
"Senator John McCain has consistently taken a strong pro-life position against abortion, has a strong pro-life voting record against abortion and opposes Roe v. Wade, the group said.
Obama and Clinton, in contrast, had voting records on abortion that were unacceptable and 100 percent pro-abortion, NRLC noted.
Both contenders for the Democratic nomination, Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton, have strong positions and voting records in favor of abortion on demand and strongly support the appointment of only U.S. Supreme Court Justices who favor Roe v. Wade, the group stated.
According to NRLC, supporting Senator McCain over any alternative candidate was a matter of perfect sense, and told LifeNews.com that it would work to inform voters of the crucial differences between McCain and his opponents.
Though the Arizona senator has often battled with more conservative wings of his party on issues of immigration, same-sex marriage, and abortion, McCain has modified his stances recently on a number of issues in order to court more support for his candidacy in Novembers upcoming presidential race.
Most recently, despite voting in the past in support of embryonic stem cell research, Senator McCain has indicated that he would be opposed to processes that involve the destruction of human life.
The National Right to Life Committee, which was first founded in 1973 in response to the U.S. Supreme Courts decision in Roe v. Wade to legalize abortion in all 50 states, has affiliates in all 50 states with over 3,000 local chapters.
They could have whined about life being unfair, and endorsed a 3rd party. NRTL is a group of adults possessing common sense. I agree with them.
NRL backed George W. Bush to the hilt (the annointed insider candidate of 2000) then Bush signed McCain-Feingold into law.
NRL parked its national support for Fred Thompson last fall with some state affiliates going for Huckabee.
NRL always supports political insiders but they would have looked like hypocrites to have endorsed McCain last fall since they trashed him over McCain-Feingold.
I think the Thompson endorsement was a ploy to stay out until McCain could win, now they can endorse by saying what everyone is saying, “What choice do we have?”
Pro-choice or no-choice that’s it. They should have a backbone and express from a staunch position that none of the candidates are acceptable. THE TRUTH! When you vote for or endorse a person whose core values(or lack thereof) you disagree with, then you have made yourself forever complicit in the acts of that persons tenure and violated your own conscience.
We will get one of them..I will go for McCain because the alternatives are so horrible.
McCain is NOT pro-choice.
THE TRUTH is that National Right to Lfe has endorsed John McCain in EVERY senatorial election.
This 2008 presidential endorsement was a no-brainer.
Well, The abortion issue is important, of course, but there is very little a conservative president can do. Best case appoint judges that overturns Roe, since most legislation is challenged under Roe. There is some budget manuvers of course. But the role of the federal government is and should be limited.
However when it comes to the economy the president is amazingly powerful and McCain is a disaster. He is a de facto socialist.
They supported Thompson when that made sense and they support McCain now, and that makes sense. Big deal
Too bad he supports abortion in the form of Embryonic Stem Cell research.
Abortion is Abortion is Abortion.
His hands are not clean in this matter.
He'll be a far sight better than EITHER Obama or Her Heinous!
Ms Q, What is worse: being shot between the eyes with a .45, .44 or .357?
We’re screwed - anyway you slice it.
The other problem besides the moral aspect is Embryonic Stem Cell Research is not necesary or scientifically useful. Most of the useful Stem Cell Research is on adult cells. Plus there is no federal ban on ESCR. And even if we were to support ESCR, it should be done with private money, by companies not the government, using private risk capital.
McCain does not get science or economics.
McCain’s ignorance backs him into all kinds of socialist decisions.
We are also at a point, with the Supreme Court, where we have a good shot at turning back some of the liberal idiocy of the last 30 years, and by not voting at all, or voting third party, we'd be allowing people like Lawrence Tribe on the Supremes. I don't believe that John McCain would be selecting barking moonbats for the Court.
Wake up america
1) McCain is a democrat. He is only running as a Republican
2) McCain’s judges will be approved by the gang of 14 and his boy Schumer. Some suggested Rudman.
3) McCain is incapable of fighting the WOT
4) He is a de facto socialist.
5) Worst of al, he is not smart.
We will never win the WOT if we treat the terrorists as if they are captured conscripts from the 3rd Panzer Division. We need to ring their necks until they squeak like a rubber ducky.
McCain wants them to get lawyers.
Actually he wants them to be transferred to Ft Leavenworth. He is too dense to realize this means the ACLU.
McCain was never my guy, but I’d MUCH prefer him, who would have Republicans running Departments and agencies in DC to either of the Marxist the Dems. are running. You talk about coddle the terrorists!
Hogwash! All of it.
