Reid: Bush has 'exit strategy' only for himself
Congressional Democrats pushed back hard Thursday against President Bushs speech on Iraq, accusing him of delaying further troop withdrawals so that he can hand off the conflict to the next president.
Democrats welcomed Bushs call to reduce troop deployments from 15 months to 12 months, but they said he should go further and embrace a proposal by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) under which soldiers would spend at least a year at home before they could be called back to active duty in Iraq.
Webbs deployment proposal came up three votes short last year, and many Democrats have discussed reviving the issue when Congress takes up the latest war supplemental in the coming weeks.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called Bushs deployment plan one step forward and two steps back.
On the one hand, Reid said, The administration is finally heeding the call of congressional Democrats and military leaders to decrease troop deployments to 12 months." On the other hand, he said that Bushs support for Gen. David Petraeus plan to pause troop withdrawals has signaled to the American people that he has no intention of bringing home any more troops.
"Instead, Reid said, he is leaving all the tough decisions to the next administration. President Bush has an exit strategy for only one man himself on January 20, 2009. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) struck a similar note.
We need better answers from the president, said Pelosi. He is just dragging this out to put it at the doorstep of the next president.

Seriously self-marginalized!
Too bad Bush doesn’t have a permanent exit plan for Reid...like a nice visit to the tribal areas of Pakistan.
Typical Democrat response. Notice they never offer a solution to anything.
Sounds just like what Clinton did in Utah by declaring all of the prime coal mining sites “National Treasures” right before leaving office to help out his criminal pals the Riadys.
America needs an “exit strategy” for this House and Senate full of self-serving, socialist, elitists.
If I had a terminal illness and was going to be granted one wish before I died, it would be to punch Harry Reid in the mouth.
Democrats talking about dragging things out? That is hilarious! They are only upset cause they think they will win the WH next and don’t want to make any hard decisions about anything other than how they can separate your money from you by calling it something other than Socialism.
Actually, the worse thing that President Bush is leaving behind is the Congressional leadership: Reid and Pelosi.
Nevada, can you be of any help here?
Please?
Indeed for all we know, it may well be top of the list at The Make A Wish Foundation.
It’s hard to believe that the Senate Dems could choose a leader - Reid - who has less charisma, charm, personality, and leadership skills than Tom Daschle. Of course Harry is a very sharp real-estate investor.
What a worm Reid is: Wally Cox meets Heinrich Himmler, with none of the brainpower of either one.
Please do not put the fine actor and US Army veteran Wally Cox in the same category as these low characters.
Well said. Democrats rarely if ever bring forth situations. Oh, but they conduct investigations and hold panels. It’s all form—not substance.
“We need better answers from the president, said Pelosi”
Didn’t this woman just endorse Barak Obama? Then on what grounds does she have to approach ANYONE regarding better answers? There hasn’t been a more shallow, more less-defined Presidential candidate in my lifetime. What does he stand for? HOPE! Unity!
Yep, that’s it. That’s his platform.
Yet morons fall for the fraud in droves.
“... Wally Cox meets Heinrich Himmler...”
LOL.
