Obama has not followed Clinton's lead in calling for an opening ceremony boycott to protest China's human rights abuses in Tibet and Darfur.
"It's very hard to tell your banker that he's wrong," Obama said, after talking about the need to restore America's stance in the world, "And if we are running huge deficits and big national debts and we're borrowing money constantly from China, that gives us less leverage. It give us less leverage to talk about human rights, it also is giving us less leverage to talk about the uneven trading relationship that we have with China."
Obama never once mentioned the Olympic Games in his response.
Big deal. President Bush is afraid of offending them, too. For God knows what reason.
There was a post up here last night about Obama joining clinton.
He almost said “because they are our Rezko”.
“For God knows what reason.”
He’s afraid of choking off our supply of coctail parasols.
I disagree. If you owe the bank $1 million, obviously the banker has the leverage. However, if you owe them $1 trillion, you have as much leverage as the bank. If you tank, the bank tanks as well. That’s why we have all kinds of bail-out on Wall Street big cats.
What can China do if U.S. declares default ? haha. Obama is an idiot, they don’t know how to deal with dictators.
At least Bush isn't running around saying China is our banker.
Obama really has no sense at all.
No, Bush is showing up at the Olympics, where it appears that he'll be about the only leader of any of the major democratic countries in attendance. Well, I'm sure he'll find something to discuss with the leaders of Syria or Iran or Burma.
Yes, everyone knows that you deal with them by sucking up to them and providing photo ops with them at the only thing they care about, the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Bad China! Bad, bad, bad! Bad China! Bad China!</sarcasm>
Oh, I know! Since he can't TELL Wright from Wrong, he'll just ASSUME the bank is right, & forget the whole uncomfortable thing.
Just like the Jeremiah Wright crap, Obama doesn't care about right or wrong. He will go into appeasement mode at the slightest hint of a threat. The 1st year of an Obama admin. will see us sending AID to Iran & Syria!
Obama is a coward & an appeaser.
Dog Catcher, maybe? POTUS, never!
If you owe a bank $1,000,000, you have a problem. If you owe the bank $1,000,000,000,000, the bank has a problem.
The US National Debt is China’s problem.
I’d say he was more afraid of offending them because they are communists...
Chamberlain did not want to offend Germany either...
The sad thing is, many FReepers do not understand international finance any better than Obama does.
“Obama does not want to offend China”
It’s really because they both think alike.
I wonder how much money the Obama campaign is getting from China.
China must’ve stopped bankrolling Clinton, now that she’s come out against them.
The bonds have been sold. China holds them. Unless the USA wants to sell even more, the deal is done and over aside from making interest payments. Default is the possibility and it works against the bond holders.
You are correct. Obama and other politicians on the right also feel that China has leverage over us. They are only partially correct and in the end, we as the global empire control if people in Shanghai have a job, can eat rice or almost anything else for that matter. However, we can and should pressure them on Tibet. It’s a tough issue but my gut tells me don’t boycott the ceremonies, but issue statements talking about what the games mean in terms of global unity and that China has missed this point in it’s treatment of Tibet.
“Big deal. President Bush is afraid of offending them, too. For God knows what reason.”
It all goes back to Daddy Bush being Ambassador to China. That must be where he picked up this free-trade, globalization, new world order bs.
