The head of the International Olympic Committee has said the Beijing Games will rebound from "crisis" after days of protests along the torch route.

Jacques Rogge told a meeting of national committees in the Chinese capital that they should assure their countries the Games would succeed.

The US stage of the torch relay passed off amid confusion and tight security in San Francisco on Wednesday.

The route was changed amid protests against China's human rights record.

Torch-bearers were immersed in a cocoon of security, surrounded by dozens of police officers and Chinese guards in track-suits

"The head of the International Olympic Committee has said the Beijing Games will rebound from "crisis" after days of protests along the torch route." They must get paid a lot.

Video Photo sequence

Photos See pic 7. The torch is OUT, NOT LIT, and the blue suit is directing the torch bearer's movements by holding his hips. WTF

I heard on the radio that a torch bearer in SF tried to show a Tibetan flag but the blue suits ripped it from her. She spoke on the radio and was pissed off. The Chinese were violent thugs to her.

Mayor pissed off a lot of people as well by changing the route.

Running alongside the torch were several of the track-suited Chinese guards whose aggressive manner caused indignation in Europe.

I fail to see the “Crisis”

The games will do just fine as far as the athletes are concerned. Nobody is going to boycott (too scared of upseting delicate Chicoms and their billions in business).

The olympics have always had political issues since at least 1936. The Chicoms are just repeating Hitler’s history act.

The crisis is for the Chinese government.

And yes, they interviewed the brave torch bearer who pulled a tibetan flag hidden in her sleeve when she got the torch. The Chicoms immediately yanked her and the SFPD pushed her to the sidelines. But she got her 15 minutes.

Isn’t it ironic that a lot of the protesters are leftist commies themselves?

That’s why the Chicoms are wrong.

And the Mayor of SF bowed like a Chinese.

I consider the Olympics to be about human triumph. Not “The Triumph of the Will”. The chi-coms don’t seem to be about human greatness.

“The Chicoms immediately yanked her and the SFPD pushed her to the sidelines.”

Got to log off but... Why should she be denied freedom of expression, here in America, by foriegn agents? If she got paid to perform thats one thing...but I don’t think she was paid.

As long as the athletes who have been working hard for this are able to go and compete, that's what it's all about. China is still going to be China after the games are over, and everyone else will go back to their daily routine (which will no longer include worrying about places like China).

The end of the Olympics will not signal the end of my worrying about China. I don't give a damn about the Olympics.

...they only THINK they are different. Four legs good, two legs bad. There is no, and never will be a, commie utopia, no matter how hard they wish for it.

Somehow I just don’t see the numbers of folks from around the world forking up big bucks to go to China to get involved in this sham called the Chi-com olympics.
You just know there will be protests and most likely riots.

No, Jacques. Crisis was when the Palis took the Israelis hostage at the Olympic Village at Munich ’72.

What this is so far is a fiasco.

I don't recall very much protest back when Beijing was named as the 2008 host city.
I do remember the PC/socialist mobs hailing the decision as a victory for diversity and a signal that the evil West was finally recognising Asia.

Theres a difference between being a leftist in an actual Communist state, and being one in a benign, tolerant, but despised Capitalist one. In the former, you are face to face with harsh reality - the inefficency, the corruption, the rampant inflation, the constant intrusiveness into your private life. In the latter however, you can happily indulge in your idealistic fantasies of how much better everything would be if only all the things that enable you politically and economically to say that were done away with.

Curious that the best time and place to be a communist is in a non-communist society...

Ah but that was before they realised that whereas Capitalism involves one section of society “exploiting” another section of society, under communist China the reverse is true. :)

Our commies are actually dumber than their commies.
