Cummins to supply diesel engines to Nissan
Indianapolis Business Journal ^ | 04/08/2008 | Staff

Nissan Motor Co. plans to break into the U.S. market for light commercial vehicles, and the move means more work for Cummins Inc. The Columbus company will make diesel engines for the three new offerings, Nissan said.

Nissan wouldn't discuss specifics, but officials said the vehicles will range from pickup trucks to buses and that they'll hit the market in the first half of 2010, according to the Associated Press. Nissan officials made the announcement at a Monday press conference in Detroit.

Nissan will spend $118 million to expand a Canton, Miss., production plant to build the vehicles, and German-based ZF Friedrichshafen will make the transmissions.

Nissan is behind the curve. The new VW TDIs will be available this summer.

But, but I thought in-sourcing of jobs would only help Japan!

I don’t understand, these are AMERICAN-MADE and designed engines!

(Yes, intentional stupidity.)

Well, with a little modification, you could squeeze a Cummins into a sedan or couple, I guess. ;)

To be honest, I missed THAT part of the article. :{

Nissan is behind the curve. The new VW TDIs will be available this summer.

According to another thread, Nissan intends to use those engines in light commercial trucks assembled in Mississippi. They're aiming at GM and Ford, not VW.

That’s pretty cool. They make a long bed Diesel Land Cruiser that they ship to Africa and Asia that I always wanted. I had a 76’ that I dearly loved, built like a tank.

Oh yeah there are some very cool versions overseas. I saw a bunch of em in middle east, Oman, Qatar, Kenya, UAE, SEA, South Africa and Australia etc etc ......Aussie versions are diesels off the shelf and that made converting mine easier as the frame will carry the cummins easy. Minor mods needed.......

Still a work in progress, very little left of the original drive train. The FJ80 series had a very very good drive train yet that six under the hood just died on me finally after 412k......:o) the body and interior is near perfect condition so it was just a project that had to be done IMO.

Looked at a ramjet, a cummins 4BT etc as that would have been an easier project and my insurance lady kept an eye out for a totaled dodge w/ a cummins. Bingo !

As stated I will post some pics and ping ya when I get er done !

Stay safe !
