Installing Free Republic Update Tonight
Posted on 04/08/2008 10:15:49 PM PDT by John Robinson
Will be installing an update tonight that fixes a number of issues. The version that will be installed is currently available on the beta site.
Changes
- Fixed the time-warping "More" links.
- Fixed time zone issues, using JavaScript to ask your browser to format the time stamp. If you don't have JavaScript enabled, you'll see the default Pacific time.
- Reverted behavior of "New comments to you" indicator.
- Updated HTML on index pages (Latest Posts, etc.) We're moving away from font tags, etc., in favor of using style sheets. Big change here is an increased font size of text in article summaries (increased to the "normal size" font)
- Added memory of last tab ("Articles", "Activity", "Comments") visited on index pages. Additionally, each tab remembers it's brevity setting. "Headers" brevity is the same as "Brief", "Text" brevity is the same as "Full". Name changed to hopefully clarify exactly what this does.
- Moved RSS link to bottom of page.
- Moved and renamed "Sidebar Placement" to bottom of page, it is now labeled "Add to My Page", hopefully that is as self-descriptive as "Sidebar Placement" was.
- Other minor tweaks
One last feature I am working to return is the slave windows preference. Will have that working before the new software is installed.
Update: Windows Preference Working
Reimplemented the open-in-new-window preference. It uses different code now. If you use this feature, please let me know if any links are not (or should not be) opening in new windows.

Is there a way to get video's that are posted here categorized into a section that we can look up or on the side bar?
a simple way to do it is just open up a side bar for miscellaneous video's. Anyone that has a video to share to just post it there.
thanks

THis one was supposed to have the above image
Looking at the HTML source for that post, I see no evidence whatsoever of any
img links, well formed or misformed. I just see the text of the one sentence that displays normally.
So I can't guess or tell who or what ate the img links. Maybe the Viking Kitties got hungry.

Here is an example of somewhere around the basic level of functionality I would think is close to about right.
limited header color or font size tags.
Strike / bold / italic / hyperlink highlighted text.
Insert image.
Make list
Paste quoted text.
Paste text as HTML
Paste text as text.
A few simple things.

Have plenty of thoughts on it. I want to move all that information above the comment text. Kind of like how it shows on Latest Posts or on the Pings page. On the moderator threads (where the abuse reports get posted), that attribute information comes before the text. The moderators also have a neat little switch that allows them to put that information on the left or right side of the comment text. Would love to have something like that for the main articles.

Viking Kitties fancy malformed HTML tags. They’ll gobble those up and save none for the threads.

The “slave window preference” is an option on FR that will open the link that you click on in a new window.
To: John Robinson
The one thing I would ask for is that in Headers view, Comments enabled, that the starting post of a thread still have a summary, even when I don’t want a summary for replies.

Setting at the bottom of the page, labeled "Windows". When anything other than "Self", then certain clicks should open in new windows. It's been breaking since the upgrades last month. Fixing it now.

Ouch... don't call it a slave window. Some 200 year in the future browser window may want reparations when the machines become sentient ;-)
To: John Robinson
OK, I understand now. Thanks for the reply, and for all you do here at FR, John! :o)

Um, I’ve done that for years - I have my own server and host my own pics, usually. Those I don’t are already hosted elsewhere.
