ALFRED, N.Y. (WIVB) - - Alfred University has cancelled all classes and closed the library per police request.

ALFRED, N.Y. (WIVB) - - Police are on campus at Alfred University, investigating a report of a Hispanic male, possibly carrying a gun.

He is described as wearing a green hoodie sweatshirt and carrying a back pack.

Faculty and students are being advised to remain inside where they are, not to go outside.

Update: The following email has been sent out to the campus:

Alfred State College has been advised that the description of the man with a weapon at Alfred University is as follow:

Hispanic Male 5 foot 9 inches tall Carrying a red book bag, single strap/type Wearing an olive green sweatshirt (army green)

Please report any information you may have immediately to the University Police at 3999. Thank You.

If I’m on that campus I’m out of there in a heartbeat. Think about it. All of the campus shootings have occurred indoors where there is a target rich environment. If he has a gun he can get into any building he wants most likely. The students should be evacuated under the supervision of campus and local police, not locked down to wait for him to “let himself in” and start shooting. I’m on a security committee of the University of California, Davis and these issues are exactly what we’re confronting now in our efforts to plan a response to threats like these. And since it is a relatively new type of threat there is no consensus as to what is good or bad policy.
