Policies inflate illegitimacy rates

Single mothers accounted for a record 37 percent of births in America in 2006, up from 5 percent in 1960. In 2006, they gave birth to 1.64 million children who will be prone to dropping out of school, abusing drugs, experiencing unemployment and poverty, landing in prison and giving birth to children out of wedlock. Those 1.64 million illegitimate children were in addition to the nearly 1.6 million born in 2005, the more than 1.5 million born in 2004 and so on. Not surprisingly, public education and the culture generally are on opposite trajectories.

Society should be alarmed, but instead its leading institutions are determined to make the numbers worse. With the news media's approval, colleges with co-ed dormitory rooms and apartments promote the promiscuity and cohabitation in which the spike in out-of-wedlock births is rooted.

Also receiving the media's good-housekeeping seal is the Single Mothers by Choice Club for professional women in their 30s and 40s. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says these women have given up trying to find "Mr. So-So," let alone Mr. Right, and now believe men's usefulness begins and ends at insemination. But in advancing the feminist stereotype of maverick moms heroically smashing the stigma of single motherhood, the article glossed over the harsh social and economic realities the vast majority of single mothers experience, conditions the government condones with programs that remove some of the economic pain and all of the social sting.

This is typical of institutions that shape the culture refusing to make moral judgments about abysmal personal choices, even when it's teenage girls unprepared for motherhood spawning with boys unsuited for fatherhood. Rather, feminists, policymakers, educators, journalists and psychobabblists who have made it their life's work to denigrate traditional American values declare all family arrangements equal. It doesn't change reality, but it allows them to sleep at night while single motherhood fuels social disintegration.

Stemming the tide will require huge infusions of honesty and morality. Stigma and shame must be restored. If single mothers truly love their children, they must admit single motherhood is nothing to which anyone should aspire and hammer that message home early and often. Mothers and fathers in two-parent families can't be too busy or timid to have repeated, candid conversations with their children about dark sides of promiscuity and cohabitation. Children must be told repeatedly the time-tested formula for a successful life — grow up in a two-parent family, get an education, start a career, get married, have children — underpins decent society and beats the hell out of any alternative.

While in principle I can't disagree with this...the facts say that a very small percentage of out of wedlock births are in college co-ed dorms. Most are either in high school or out of school but not college educated.

And let's not forget these liberal policies that have replaced the father with a welfare check have come to us courtesy of LBJ democrats.

But that's OK. They have a plan to overcome the millions of unplanned pregnancies. They plan on aborting as many blacks and minorities as they can.

Sadly, there are no politicians out there - Republicans or Democrats - that can change this. Hell, most of them would vehemently disagree that there is a problem.

Hispanic immigrants have seen the largest increase in out-of-wedlock births in the US — from 19 percent of births in 1980 to 42 percent in 2003. This is important because Hispanics account for nearly 60 percent of all births to immigrants.

How about the most important issue of all, the burden on tax payer for all these services they and thier offspring will take advantage of. Many families in the system encourage this as a life style, councilors encourage and recruit members to keep the budget monies alloted every year at the same level or higher, many know there is a huge safety net for them so they really are not concerned about the cost or expense, some even expect and demand that we take care of them. These programs are out of control and the liberals who bitched and moaned about restrictions and responsibilities on these individuals like it this way, there is a free flow of money, a bottomless pit, like many other programs such as SSI, medicaid medicare and now the new sensation national healthcare. This is what is killing this country

Single moms represent one of the greatest possible threats to individual liberty in America today! They would immediately sell all of our hard-earned freedoms for the promise of greater security. No wonder they vote in droves for Democrats.

I agree. Two things though: The article said coed ROOMS, not just dorms. Admittedly this is shocking but would certainly increase college sex. But I still agree with you. I knew of several classmates in highschool who produced children, but the only ones I ever saw in college were married. Also, account for the facts that colleges are stalwart abortionists and the claim just doesn’t add up.

I have a personal hypothesis.
Blame,to some extent,obesity.
Overweight girls have a problem keeping boyfriends but no problem getting sex.
The low self-esteem at their personal appearance makes them try to trap boyfriends by getting pregnant and if that doesn’t work,at least they have a child that will love them no matter their looks.
Plus,the resulting welfare keeps the calories coming.
I may be totally wrong,but obese single mothers are as common as lies on a Clinton.

Also...Our government schools are hard at work at emasculating little boys and turning them into metrosexual weenies. And...they are also indoctrinating little girls to have contempt for men.

Any parent that would send a child into the government school indoctrination camps is either completely clueless or evil.
