HARARE, ZIMBABWE -- Militant war veterans allied with Zimbabwe's ruler threatened to evict white farmers Sunday, and about a dozen opposition activists were beaten and arrested by police over the weekend. The attacks raised fears that President Robert Mugabe's government was launching a violent campaign to assure his victory in an expected presidential runoff election.
Eighteen farmers were threatened and several were forced to flee their properties as they were besieged by chanting, drum-beating mobs. Representatives of the farmers said there was no police response even as the situation worsened late Sunday.
"I'm feeling a bit speechless and a bit gutted at the moment, to be honest," said one of the farmers, who asked that his name not be used for fear of inflaming a volatile situation. He, his wife and three children moved out for safety, after hearing 50 people were approaching the farm to evict him.
"I'm still afraid. You don't know what the future holds, do you?" he said.

“I’m still afraid. You don’t know what the future holds, do you?” he said.
I could have told him exactly what his future held 15 years ago.

Thanks for posting all of these for so many years, Clive. I will admit I don’t get it. At some point isn’t it worth it to go out fighting? 50 drunk Marxists want to take my farm? COOL! I count that as even odds. My AR-10, my wife’s AR-15, my buddy’s good ole Garand. They might win but I would have a hell of a honor guard in Valhalla. What has happened to the spirit of the people who civilized this corner of the world? I do not get it.
The police looked the other way when the "War Veterans" committed murder.
The "War Veterans" are actually mostlt young thugs in their twenties. The irony is that the war of which they are the supposed "Veterans" (the "Third Chimurenga") ended over a quarter of a century ago, before most of the "War Veterans" were born.
The farm invasions were not impulsive drunken episodes. They were sober, planned invasions in numbers that overwhelmed the farm fanilies and any employees that wer brave enough, foolish enough and loyal enough to remain.
Call the police and you would be told that they did not inerfere in political matters or that the did not have sufficient transport to respond. Display a weapon and armed police would appear to arrest you and the "War Veterans" would continue their invasion.
