Police in jogging gear put the torch out and brought it aboard a bus, apparently to move it away from protesters. The flame was being carried down a road along the Seine River amid demonstrators carrying Tibetan flags when the relay was stopped. It is not immediately clear what police plan next.

Free Tibet!

(But not Iraq.)

Free speech to the Tibetans!

(But Europeans should not say or print anything anti-Islamonazi.)

When these people can move beyond bloodless diamonds, carbon offsets, green everything, and feel-good gestures for African children (but ignore the thugs who are killing those children), then let me know. Otherwise, this is just another feel-good cause celebre.

Lovely French pragmatism at work. I do not like the ChiComs and I do not like the idea of them holding the Olympics and I do not like the idea of them requiring NZ athletes to not say mean things about their human rights atrocities during the Olympics.

And I do not like the thoroughly-corrupt-and-discredited Olympics and I am glad their foolish torch got snuffed out by the French. I do not intend to watch drug abusers and cheats “win” gold medals at Beijing and my only regret is that NZ tax money is being invested into sending our mighty Team of Athletes to compete in such a shonky competition: they deserve better.

Good on the French, good on the Tibetan-bloody-monks, and good on the Falun Gong. I haven’t forgotten what happened at Tienenmin Square and I hope other folk haven’t either.

Isnt the idea to protect it from going out?

It kind of seems like the French were worried that protesters would get to the torch and extinguish it -- which would be very embarrassing. And so, to prevent such a terrible thing, the police got to the torch first, and they extinguished it.

Surrender monkeys.

Your tagline reminded me of something that seems apropos of this situation:

You’ve got that right. I don’t like the Olympics being used as a political pawn. It could happen to us someday, others boycotting the Olympics being held in the U.S. because of some trumped up reason, like we don’t let Mexican illegals into our country and give them their civil rights. Wait and see, it could happen to us. Meanwhile, all those athletes who trained for years to compete in the Olympics get the shaft. Don’t like this at all.

Most everything that one can buy in the EU is made in China just as it is here so the protest would be to stop buying goods from China.

You’d think they’d be good at extinquishing fires by now...what with all the “yout” protests and burning cars.

If I was a French cop I would arrest the fellow carrying the torch for disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. And I would arrest any spectators for unlawful assembly.

That would put a damper on their parade, no worries about that!
