Mike Wallace Interviews Eddie Arcaro and does Live Cigarette Commercials (1957)
Harry Ransom Center (Univ of Texas at Austin) ^

This is an interesting interview on many levels. Even if one cares nothing for horse racing, just watching Wallace do the opening promo for his Philip Morris cigarette is amusing at least. (There are several of these later on too.) Wallace's focus on the money aspects of racing probably says more about Wallace than about Racing or Arcaro. It's interesting to me that here Wallace was interviewing the best jockey of that era and he never once asked about the horses Arcaro rode, the races Arcaro won (or lost), or the places where the races were contested.

That must be part of what made him a legendary journalist, or at least a legend in his own mind.

Nope, never did hear him ask about the horses. Mike must have lost a bundle gambling.

Clicking around there, Mike and his cig interviewed Gloria Swanson, movie star and chairman of the Committee for Independent Cancer Research, who spoke for maybe 60 seconds on curing cancer before Mike changed the subject to the American man not taking time to buy posies for his gal.

Maybe it should have been "Sexist Mike Malice"? (or perhaps "Homophobic Mike Malice"?) I hope you caught the part where Wallace referred to his Philip Morris cigarette as "a real man's cigarette."

Back in the 40’s and 50’s, tobacco's rule was unchallenged. John Cameron Swayze anchored a program called the “Camel News Caravan,” and although Swayze was a non smoker, R. J. Reynolds insisted that the anchor desk include a prominently placed ashtray.

Mike was too busy to let himself get overwhelmed by details. He was also busy as announcer for Sky King. Out of the clear blue of the western skies...
