Microsoft's efforts to get businesses to adopt Vista may come to a screeching halt now that Bill Gates has announced "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version", referring to
Windows 7, the next expected version of the company's flagship desktop operating system. With a new version available soon, many organizations may decide to
wait and see if they can avoid the pain of a Vista rollout altogether.

Windows 7 won’t be worth having till 2 years after it’s release when service pack 2 is released.

Impossible. I predict Vista is going to be around at least five years. It takes time to design and develop an operating system from the ground up. Windows Vista was extraordinarily complicated. There's no reason to believe Windows 7 can be brought to market in a year.

How is this different from Xp and Vista?? I run Xp, does this mean I have to load something else or does it replace those two?

It takes time to design and develop an operating system from the ground up. What makes you think they will do that?

It would replace Vista. Its a question of just how fast emerging technologies and standards can be supported in a new OS. With tens of thousands of lines of code, its not easy to do that. With all the programming skill and know-how in the world, there will be bugs.

So basically Vista turned out to be Windows ME Part Deux.

Microsoft and the OEM makers have a symbiotic relationship. The only reason for building more powerful hardware is to run an OS that can take full advantage of it. Computer manufacturers know their sales are tied into Microsoft's flagship product, as most people buy the OS pre-installed on a new computer.

I will try to hang on to Xp as long as I can. BTW - my grandmom runs Windows 3.1 - she just writes letters and prints newsletters and labels. No Internet, doesn’t care for it - works fine for her .....

Windows 7 will be the last 32 bit Windows. Vista is so big, it really needs at least 2 GB of RAM, and a 32 bit processor can only address 4 GB directly.

There's no reason to believe Windows 7 can be brought to market in a year. They can do it if it's actually XP Service Pack 3 with a new splash screen. ;)

Unlike Windows ME Vista actually works.

With enough memory, its rock-solid. The Service Pack 1 should fix the bugs that came out in the original Vista rollout a year ago.

Windows has gotten worse as a resource hog because so much is demanded of it. And yet its not capable of taking full advantage of the hardware's capacity. That's a challenge for Microsoft to solve.

Windows 7 wont be worth having till 2 years after its release when service pack 2 is released. It also won't be out next year, either. Bet. This is a strategic statement meant to get those refusing to upgrade from XP to hold out in hope of a better Windows in the near future rather than investigating other options. It'll work.

THey have been working on the basis of the next windows for awhile now, the biggest change will probably be the file system and resource allocation and utilization. THe hardest though has been building a new OS from the ground up that is still backwards compatible with past windows applications and hardware, which is one of the reasons why you have seen Windows continue to bloat as its different versions came out.
