BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - campaign_minute Hillary Rodham Clinton made fun of herself Thursday, telling "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno she almost didn't make it to his studio.
"It is so great to be here, I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," Clinton said after joining him onstage, referring to her claimssince disputedthat she dodged sniper bullets while arriving in Bosnia as first lady. Clinton later said she had "misspoke."
As she entered, Leno's band played the "Rocky" theme, jumping off her statement this week that she is the underdog in the Democratic nominating contest against Barack Obama, just like the fictitious boxer was against his opponent in the Oscar-winning movie.
"This has been such a mismatch of words and action," Clinton continued. "Obviously I've been so privileged to represent our country in more than 80 other countries, lots of war zones. I wrote about it in my book and obviously had a lapse. But here I am, safe and sound."
Leno asked how much sleep Clinton was getting. "Answering the phone at 3:00, that's gotta be tough," he joked, referring to her campaign commercials that ask which candidate would be the best prepared as president for middle-of-the-night emergencies.
"It happens every single night. Someone calls up and they have something to say. You've got to stop calling me," Clinton told Leno.
Clinton said she was proud of her daughter, Chelsea, 28, who has been campaigning for her. But she said her "stomach is in knots" most days thinking about what she might encounter each day. Chelsea Clinton has fielded some tough questions in recent appearances, particularly about her father's relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Her response has been that it's none of the questioner's business.
Asked about her daughter telling a voter that her mother might make a better president than her father, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton grinned and said: "She is such a smart young woman."
Leno also asked about moments during the campaign in which the former president has blown up at reporters and others.
"When you're supporting someone you love, you really do take it very much to heart," she said. "I said 'OK, honey, that's all right, we don't have to go get excited about it.' He's doing a great job for me but he does get a little carried away sometimes."
can we leave those type of comments over at D.U.h ?
name calling is not intelligent discourse
Wasn’t there some high ranking officer who committed suicide when it was pointed out that he was wearing a ribbon (or whatever they are called) he didn’t deserve? And who was it that made that accusation in the first place?
Man this is getting good. She should have left it alone, the story was fading. But she seems not to realize people are laughing AT her and not WITH her.
> Chelsea Clinton has fielded some tough questions in recent appearances, particularly about her father’s relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Her response has been that it’s none of the questioner’s business.
What a bollix answer! I hope you Yanks aren’t letting this one slide... what Clinton did with Monica Lewinsky was MOST CERTAINLY everybody’s business: he was reported to have munched pizza and discussed by telephone sending American troops to war in the former Jugoslavia WHILST BEING SERVICED by Monica Lewinsky!
If that is none of your business then God Alone Knows what you are entitled to know!
He lied about the whole sordid affair to all of you, on National television.
If that is none of your business then God Alone Knows what you are entitled to know!
He brought the office of the President of the United States of America into disrepute and made the rest of us around the world laugh in derision.
If that is none of your business then God Alone KNows what you are entitled to know!
Somebody ought to take Chelsea to task the very next time she says “none of your business” — yes, ma’am, it is most certainly our business and as you are shilling for your mum you’d better be prepared to cough up some answers. Or STFU and leave the campaigning to the adults.
Yeah, and sweetcheeks Chelsea didn’t so much as field that question as run from it. She refused to answer it.
It’s despicable for her to make fun of her blatant, sick lying, especially a lie that shows an utter ignorance of how the U.S. military operates and impugns their competence.
Hillary, remember this old saying - He who laughs last, laughs best (or the loudest) since I have heard both. Looking at the screen shots, looks like you need a widescreen TV to watch her.
Is the Hildebeast running for President or the next American Idol?
And that is why this is serious. Not just some "gaff". She wants to be the Comander-in-Chief of our armed forces during war time and blatantly lie about coming under sniper fire. That should be an automatic disqualifier.
The two contests have merged.
Exhibit A: Barack Obama
We'll either know that by early Novemer, 2008 ... or we'll have to wait 8 years for a definitive answer.
As long as she's in political life, she'll be excavating new lows.
"He said - she said" is a dispute. Eye-witnesses and video tape prove hitlery LIED.
Actually, they prove she spoke falsehood, and passed it off as truth. That leaves two possibilities (which aren't entirely mutually exclusive): She's a liar and/or she's delusional.
Both are disqualifiers as to fitness for the office of President.
