BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - campaign_minute Hillary Rodham Clinton made fun of herself Thursday, telling "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno she almost didn't make it to his studio.
"It is so great to be here, I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," Clinton said after joining him onstage, referring to her claimssince disputedthat she dodged sniper bullets while arriving in Bosnia as first lady. Clinton later said she had "misspoke."
As she entered, Leno's band played the "Rocky" theme, jumping off her statement this week that she is the underdog in the Democratic nominating contest against Barack Obama, just like the fictitious boxer was against his opponent in the Oscar-winning movie.
"This has been such a mismatch of words and action," Clinton continued. "Obviously I've been so privileged to represent our country in more than 80 other countries, lots of war zones. I wrote about it in my book and obviously had a lapse. But here I am, safe and sound."
Leno asked how much sleep Clinton was getting. "Answering the phone at 3:00, that's gotta be tough," he joked, referring to her campaign commercials that ask which candidate would be the best prepared as president for middle-of-the-night emergencies.
"It happens every single night. Someone calls up and they have something to say. You've got to stop calling me," Clinton told Leno.
Clinton said she was proud of her daughter, Chelsea, 28, who has been campaigning for her. But she said her "stomach is in knots" most days thinking about what she might encounter each day. Chelsea Clinton has fielded some tough questions in recent appearances, particularly about her father's relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Her response has been that it's none of the questioner's business.
Asked about her daughter telling a voter that her mother might make a better president than her father, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton grinned and said: "She is such a smart young woman."
Leno also asked about moments during the campaign in which the former president has blown up at reporters and others.
"When you're supporting someone you love, you really do take it very much to heart," she said. "I said 'OK, honey, that's all right, we don't have to go get excited about it.' He's doing a great job for me but he does get a little carried away sometimes."

Sorry, Sen Clinton, but the joke is on you. Unfortunately, if anyone is laughing, they are not laughing WITH you. But you brought that on yourself.
This joke is not funny it is sad for her to lie and pretend that it is funny when she is running to be the president.
A bowling score of 37 is funny. Lying to our faces repeatedly - not funny.
Telling a lie is a conscious decision. HRC knew it was a lie the first time she said. She knew it was a lie the second time, too.
And we are supposed to take this narcissistic woman seriously?
How do you explain a lie ? You certainly dont make a joke of it.
Sorry Hillary, a lie is still a lie.
Hillarys joke about her Bosnia adventure is not funny. Her continuing pattern of lies should trouble all Americans. But I believe the MSM has missed the most disturbing aspect of her Bosnia lie. And that is the fact that she brought her child into the lie with her. Chelsea was on the trip and Chelsea knows the truth of what happened. But she was forced (or perhaps chose) to remain silent at the same time she must be aware her mother lied. She must have little doubt now that her mother will do anything to get what she wants and I find that sad and a serious character flaw.
To 'REAL' American soldiers serving overseas - sniper fire is no joke. She reminds me of the 'phony' veterans who never saw a uniform.
I’m up late, or early, depending on the time zone.
I just deleted a very ugly post about Ms. Klinton.
I totally agree with you, k.
She, and the others who haven’t legitimately worn the uniform, should be very ashamed of themselves.
I pinged you, mr/ms mods, to tell you all what a good job you’re doing.
Does that surprise you? ;o)
That’s just for starters...
Amen.
All the "heroes" below are fakes and phony soldiers.
How is Rhandi? I see she got over her "mugging" by eleven long island ice teas.
That is a bizarre attempt to put a bandade on an arterial gusher and shows a total lack of seriousness over actions that have truly worried her otherwise spporters. Despite Clintanoid focus groups, I can’t believe Hillary showing that repeated lieing it not worth worrying about is a winner.
Did Sidney provide the beverages before Carville’s Waaaar Room dreamed this one up??
Look at how little respect she has for her own husband’s time in office. Of course, many Americans agree with her, that the Clinton Presidency was a joke. But for her to feel that way — which she obviously does — is pretty amazing.
It’s Bill’s Presidency that made her own possible, and her refusal to acknowledge that is a lapse of sniper-fire proportions.
Can you imagine if W was asked about his father’s presidency, how respectfully he would answer the question, even on a Leno-type venue.
The Clintons, all of them, are gutter trash. They are turds. Even to each other.
What if you had say, corn on the cob but you claimed you had carrot cake?
Well?
Regards
When you start becoming a clown and and they start spoofing your recent (only most recent) lies and deceptions, you know it is over. Hillary, enjoy the oblivion to which you are headed and richly deserve.
It is sad AND a serious character flaw...but Chelsea was aware of this long ago and has helped participate in these deceptions for some time. (i.e. the September 11th lies and subsequent story in Talk Magazine.)
It’s easier to just consider the Clintons one big lie... past, present and future.
Nothing surprises me with these two. The sad part is that a portion of the public accepts it all without question.
Another thought: Remember the movie Groudhog Day? I read recently where it is one of the most watched movies of all time. Religous groups of all kinds use it as a lesson in moral development.
In the Clinton’s case we are watching a reverse Groundhog Day performance. They keep doing the same things over and over again, and we’re all supposed to change to accept what they do.
Don’t think it’s going to work this time.
