Obama Comes Out Against Concealed Carry [big duhhh-if firearms are illegal, nothing to carry]

Barack Obama is embracing anti-gun policies in the run-up to a Democratic presidential debate scheduled on the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings.

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,” Obama told the Pittsburgh Tribune. “I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations.”

These remarks break from Obama’s previous moderate rhetoric on gun control.

While campaigning in Idaho in February, Obama promised, “I have no intention of taking away folks’ guns.”

Obama elaborated later that month in a political forum sponsored by ABC News and the Politico. He said: “I think it's important for us to recognize that we've got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of law-abiding citizens use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have a violence on the streets that is the result of illegal handgun usage. And so I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets. And cracking down on the various loopholes that exist in terms of background checks for children, the mentally ill. We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measure that I think respects the Second Amendment and people's traditions."

Obama’s tough talk on gun control may be prompted by Philadelphia-based Democratic leaders who are pressuring Clinton and Obama to adopt harder stances on gun control. This issue is expected to come up in ABC News’ Democratic debate on April 16 in Philadelphia. 32 people were shot to death on the campus of Virginia Tech by Seung-Hui Cho April 16, 2007.

Obama’s new hardline liberal position differs from his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and GOP candidate John McCain, who both are for concealed-carry.

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said in a statement Obama should apologize and revise his stance. “Barack Obama ignorantly believes that legally-armed Americans are as reckless and irresponsible as the criminals with whom his political sympathies evidently law,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “He has been insisting for months he supports the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, but here he is now campaigning in Pennsylvania, stating essentially he would prefers Americans not exercise that right.”

Philadelphia's out of control with violence. Dems should concentrate on locking up criminals instead of worrying about gun control...

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,” Obama told the Pittsburgh Tribune.

Thankfully Obama and his gun-grabbing friends are fighting a losing battle:

c. ammunition for handguns and assault weapons? I would support banning the sale of ammunition for assault weapons and limiting the sale of ammunition for handguns.

(sighs) That means a lot of ammo used in everyday purposes.

Is there a problem here?

Clearly an assault weapon

The only assault weapon feature it doesn't have is a pistol grip. So it can't be used to spray fire from the hip.

As it can fire .223 Remington, that must be "ammunition for assault weapons "

But no problem. Genuine hunters don't use .223 Remington to hunt varmits

Also has a "pistol grip" projecting below the stock.

But I was going for "California legal"

“Get rid of the guns and nobody will die.” is their line of twisted “logic”.

Meaning that, if the Israelis just laid down their arms, every thing would be hunky-dory in the Middle East, huh?

Idiots.

{If you look at the counties in NY, NJ, and PA that have a high concentration of blue collar workers, you will see that such areas are the most Democratic in those states outside of the ghettoes.}

I sometimes wonder if the so called Reagan Dems were conservative at all. The Reagan Dems had no problem voting liberals into Congress and the state houses. Many of the Reagan Dems were Polish and Eastern European immigrants who were concerned about Communism. They voted for Reagan for national security reasons. Carter proved to be a dud on foreign policy. They wanted a President who would tough on Communism. Reagan met their criteria. When the Soviet Union fell, the Reagan Dems became just plain Dems. They happily voted for Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton.

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,”

Unless, of course, they are being carried by the tax-payer provided secret service detail that protects my family and me, 24-7. The rest of the plebians should only have the option of calling 911 and hoping the police arrive in time to protect them from becoming a victim.

What is the difference between shall-issue and unrestricted?

For that matter, between shall-issue and may-issue? (Though that one seems a little more obvious.)

Could you please explain? Thanks.

'Unrestricted' states (Alaska, Vermont) don't require or issue permits -- anyone can carry.

'Shall issue' states (which are in the vast majority nowadays, as you can see from that map I posted) issue CCW permits to anyone who qualifies. Qualifications differ slightly from state to state (for instance, some states may require a prospective CCW holder to take a weekend gun safety course), but they're usually minor -- not have a violent criminal record is often all that's required. In my state (WA) I simply applied at the local sheriff's office and received my permit in the mail a few days later.

"May issue" states (like CA and NY) may as well be "no issue" states. ...unless one lives in a rural county with a pro-gun sherrif.
