City students, officials hold rally to protest shootings as teen fatalities mount

Public officials rallied for tougher gun laws Tuesday in the wake of yet another teen shooting, but of the nearly 1,000 Chicago public school students who joined them at the Thompson Center, many said the solutions are more complicated.

In the chanting, sign-waving crowd, Corine Minniefield, a junior at Banner Linc Academy, said school officials need to get truants and drop-outs back in class and that police need to tighten up their protection.

"I'm just tired of turning on the news and seeing my people get killed. I can't go to no more funerals. I'm tired of going to funerals," said Minniefield, 18, whose cousin Ruben Ivy was killed at Crane High School last month.

What wasn't reported as part of this story is that Simeon High students were actually bussed to this political rally attended by Daley and Boy Gov. Seriously. If anyone has the article about these kids being bused during the school day to this rally, please post it.

"It's gang-related. These boys are losing their minds. They don't have anything to fall back on. They just look toward the streets," Dean said. "They just don't care."

Money quote. Where are the fathers? Solve that problem and you will solve the gang problem. But that is not what the city wants because that would lead to something other than dependency on the government.

"Many said the solutions are more complicated."

They can say that again. Banning guns is a red-herring that masks the root causes of this antisocial behavior. Look to the family structures of these people and the value systems the majority operate under, all learned primarily at home.

And therein lies the problem...not the method of murder.

If guns were to be banned, does that mean these people would stop killing each other? Not hardly. First, there will always be a supply of guns regardless of any ban. Second, they are not killing each other simply because they have guns, and would continue to kill each other with other means if no guns were available (which will never happen with the numbers of illegal weapons out there). Red herring is the only way to describe their position.

The gun grabbers could melt down every firearm in the nation but the violence won’t stop if society doesn’t end the bastard boom.

The legions of fatherless thugs would simply hack at each other (and the rest of us) with machetes.

If they’d stay in school, they’d learn math >>>

If they learn math, they won’t make changing errors when they are selling crack >>>

When they stop short-changing their customers, they’ll stop getting shot and killed.

The fathers have been driven out of the families by welfare rules that state that

you don’t get the check if you’re married to the father of your children.

“Liberals” thought this was a good idea.

There is NO PROBLEM that we face today that isn’t the product of a shortsighted “liberal” policy.

I doubt that is the main cause--it is a complete breakdown of any civilized culture

Agreed. If there were more “mom, dad(as a married, committed couple)& kids”,instead of “my baby’s momma” or “my baby’s daddy”,there might be a change in the direction in which this country’s headed.
Aw,but that’s just crazy talk!

We would have to completely stop subsidizing single motherhood. But the libs will then accuse you of being a heartless fascist.

Those who demand bigger and bigger government are the Fascists.

And those who prefer charity to government are not heartless.
