Been monitoring for forces build up in the persian gulf area. Debka (holding source at arms length) is saying additional naval elements enroute. I suspect this is part of the rotation cycle for the navy. Anyone else heard otherwise?

Gen. Petraeus named as next commander of Mideast command

By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Gen. David Petraeus, the four-star general whose led troops in Iraq for the past year, has been tapped to become the next commander of U.S. Central Command, according to an official familiar with the decision.

If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Navy Adm. William Fallon, who abruptly stepped down in March after a magazine reported that he was at odds with President Bush over Iran policy. Fallon said the report had become a distraction.

Taking Petraeus’ position as the senior commander in Iraq would be Army Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, who had until recently been serving as Petraeus’ deputy.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been announced.

Petraeus, 55, is widely hailed by the Bush administration and members of Congress for developing and implementing a new strategy in Iraq, including the deployment of some 30,000 additional troops, that dramatically improved security.

I suspect a more agressive stance towards Iran.

I agree. I think that he is the best man to head

Hey 'Zilla. Actually as far as my contacts go, things are really REALLY quiet. Now that I think of it, maybe too quiet. I agree with you that it's probably normal naval rotations unless there are ground elements and air assets also on the move. If that's the case, I'd be willing to bet that Tehran is about to do it's famous "parking lot" imitation.

I wonder how a pre-emptive strike on Imanutjob would affect our elections?

There have been various theories about a strike once the primaries are over. It seems the push is ratcheting up. Petraeus emphasizing Iranian forces directly supporting Mookies forces in Basra. More and more Iranian munitions being found, playing chicken in the persian gulf - etc. If a strike is ordered before Nov, there will need to be a lot of supporting evidence or the Iranians help us out by really stepping on themselves and doing something foolish. And of course there is the Israeli factor, but their political leadership is practically non-existant at the moment.

Nigeria: Muslims rioting, attacking Christians over claim that a Christian blasphemed Muhammad

Thousands of Christians trapped in churches as Muslims riot, looking for them.

“Nigeria: Muslim Rioters Attack Christians In Kano: Claim of ‘blasphemy’ in city market leads to looting, destruction,” from Compass Direct News (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):

KANO, Nigeria, April 23 (Compass Direct News) – Hundreds of Muslims took to the streets of this northern Nigerian city on Sunday (April 20), attacking Christians and their shops and setting vehicles on fire on claims that a Christian had blasphemed Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.
Thousands of Christians were trapped in churches until police dispersed rioters. Fearing that Muslims may attack again, many Christians have relocated to army and police barracks in the city.

An as yet unidentified Christian was said to have written an inscription on a shop wall that disparaged the prophet of Islam. Muslims at a market in the Sabon Garia area of the city reportedly attacked the Christian, whom police rescued and took to the area police station.

Muslims in large numbers soon trooped to the police station, threatening to set it ablaze unless officers released the Christian to be stoned to death in accordance with sharia (Islamic law), sources said. Police were able to disperse the mob.

“A Christian trader was accused of making some blasphemous inscriptions against Muhammad in his shop by his Muslim colleagues, who pounced on him,” Baba Mohammed, Kano police spokesman, said in a special radio broadcast.

He said the accused Christian escaped from being lynched and ran to the police station seeking protection, adding, “We had to move him to the police headquarters here in Kano for protection.”

Police have arrested some of the Muslim rioters, he said, adding that an investigation is underway.

“We have made several arrests of persons suspected of attempting to breach the peace while the suspect [accused Christian] is in our custody pending conclusion of the investigation,” Mohammed said.

Nnamdi Ike, a Christian who witnessed the disturbances, told Compass in Kano that Muslim claims that a Christian painted an inscription insulting Muhammad were false.

“Christians have always been attacked on false claims of blasphemy,” Ike said. “No Christian wrote anything against Muhammad or Islam. It is all a lie. They just made this up to find a reason to attack us.”..

Excellent point. When are they supposed to be holding elections themselves? Isn't Netanyahu set to take over, again? Bebe is a bit impulsive but he's got guts, I think. I hope he has the sense to simply let the IDF go and do their jobs without putting any ROE constraints on them, because that is a sure recipe for a butt whuppin' What's your assessment if Netanyahu is in charge the next time Katusas (or worse) start raining down on Israel? Is the IDF a paper tiger that is largely untested in real toe to toe combat with trained soldiers (not terrorists) from the Arab nations? Can they pull off another victory like those of the 1960s and 70s?

Iraqi, Coalition Forces Detain Six, Destroy Weapons Caches

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2008 – Iraqi and coalition forces detained six suspected criminals and destroyed multiple weapons caches today near Khan Bani Saad, an area allegedly used as a manufacturing and storage location for homemade bombs, north of Baghdad.

Acting on previously gathered intelligence, Iraqi and coalition forces moved into the area and immediately stopped a suspected criminal’s vehicle trying to escape.

They discovered numerous weapons and detained three individuals. One of those detained allegedly received weapons training in Iran and was involved in numerous attacks on coalition forces and Iraqi security forces personnel, officials said.

The combined forces detained three more suspects during building searches at two other locations. Additionally, they discovered more weapons caches that included various munitions, assault rifles, and other weapons and materials to create bombs. All weapons materials were destroyed.

In operations in Iraq yesterday:

— Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team witnessed a criminal emplacing an improvised explosive device in northeast Baghdad. Soldiers shot and killed the criminal.

— Unmanned aerial vehicle operators from the 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team spotted two individuals with a mortar tube. They loaded the weapon into a vehicle and drove off in northeastern Baghdad. Shortly after their departure, the UAV fired one Hellfire missile, killing two criminals and destroying one vehicle.

— In northeastern Baghdad, soldiers from 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, attached to the 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team, engaged and killed one criminal after coming under a small-arms fire.

— In eastern Baghdad, criminals attacked soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team with a homemade bomb while the soldiers were conducting a mounted patrol. The patrol was then attacked with rocket-propelled grenades. The soldiers identified the criminals’ location and engaged them with small-arms fire, killing six.

— Criminals attacked soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team with RPGs in eastern Baghdad. Soldiers identified two separate RPG teams and retuned fire, killing five criminals.

-– Elements from 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, detained a suspected criminal in the Abu Ghraib area, west of Baghdad. This suspect is believed to be involved with attacks on Iraqi army and coalition forces and the making of homemade bombs.

-– Soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team discovered and seized four Iranian-made 107 mm rockets while patrolling their sector in the Rashid district of southern Baghdad.

In Iraq operations April 21:

-– Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, discovered a weapons cache containing rocket-propelled grenade rounds, an AK-47 assault rifle and a box of PKC rounds in Yusifiyah. The cache was destroyed by an explosive team.

-– A member of the local “Sons of Iraq” citizen security group led Multinational Division Center soldiers of 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, to a weapons cache containing two armor-piercing explosively formed projectiles near Jisr Diyala. One of the EFPs had a makeshift stand for adjusting elevation. Both were turned over to an explosives team.

-– Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers of the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, attached to the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team, seized three anti-tank RPG launchers and 10 high-explosive RPG rounds in the Rashid district in southern Baghdad. Soldiers from Company C, 4-64th AR, along with their Iraqi security forces counterparts from the 3rd Battalion, 5th Brigade, 2nd National Police Division, discovered the weapons cache.

Operations Net Two Suspects in Afghanistan

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2008 – Separate operations in Afghanistan resulted in the detention of two suspects.

A suspected Taliban militant was detained April 22 during an Afghan and coalition forces joint operation to disrupt militant roadside-bomb activities in the Jaberi district of Khowst province.

The combined forces searched several compounds in the district, targeting a Taliban militant known to have facilitated bomb attacks against Afghan government and coalition forces.

On April 21, Afghan National Security and coalition forces searched compounds in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province and detained a suspected militant during an operation to disrupt Taliban operations.

Isn't Netanyahu set to take over, again?

I don't know, but he is the closest thing to a real leader they have now.

What's your assessment if Netanyahu is in charge the next time Katusas (or worse) start raining down on Israel?

IIRC Bebe started the policy to target the leadership and I suspect that the hamazies will be painted with a laser designator if they get too frisky. Same for Hezzies in the north.

Is the IDF a paper tiger that is largely untested in real toe to toe combat with trained soldiers (not terrorists) from the Arab nations?

I read about indicators that training and readiness of the army has dropped significantly during the current leadership - but then thats what happens when you get a wuss for a leader. Their new CG is a kick tail and take names kinda guy and has started an intensive logistical and readiness program to whip them into top shape again.

Can they pull off another victory like those of the 1960s and 70s?

No, conditions are very different. If Syria tries anything conventional they'll get their heads handed to them. Same for Hezzies IF they start to lob rockets again (and Bebe is in charge). What IS different is the tactical/stratigic rockets. Those were never in play before in the 60s and 70s. What worries me is if the moslems do something stupid and lob a NBC weapon, the only response Israel will be able to do is nuclear, and things could grow quickly out of hand from there.
